icy, if you are by chance taking a class simply named philosophy, in a western institution, and you're not currently explicitly working on non-western material, using it was a daring move that to the teacher was almost like admitting you don't know what you're /meant/ to use

I doubt it was racism. Is the course perhaps based around Western Philosophy? Plato, Aristotle, all those boyohs?

Yeah, that's... a bit odd. Unless, as others noted, it's a class specifically related to western philosophy. If you're really concerned, you might consider talking to whoever the next person up in the chain of academic command is -- head of the philosophy department or whoever's below them, etc. If nothing else, you might be able to at least get an explanation as to the teacher's reasoning.

... and serg, that's kinda' freakishly inaccurate. There's tremendous historical influence in the sciences from eastern philosophies, particularly middle-eastern.

Aye, aye. Good luck, et al. There is a pretty heavy bias towards western philosophy in most english speaking schools, from what I've seen, but as you note, at least some mention of others should be encouraged. It's not like they've been completely divorced from each other, after all...

There's usually a syllabus that is followed - the name itself says nothing about what should be talked about.
At the moment, I'm somewhat inclined to agree with your teacher; could you provide more specific info? What was the subject, what was the question, what was your answer, how did you present it?

Indeed, the best plan is to give the dwarves a good whack over the head with a shovel when they pop up. Too many and they'll ruin your garden with all the holes.
