Suddenly reminded of a weird form of culture shock I ran into last year. My parents were refugees from Vietnam, and both came from large and pretty traditional families. As such I was raised with a lot of the old traditions and intentionally or not, became very respectful and reverent of my heritage, not to mention that for whatever reason I grew up to be an unusually formal person. So I felt kinda shocked and weirded out when I encounter two girls in my class who were also Vietnamese American (and two be honest kinda trashy) and who referred to Vietnamese (both the language and Ethnicity) as Viet. It just seemed so strange and kinda disrespectful shortening the name like that.

Oh, New Jersey is the "toilet of the world," as my friend so eloquently put it.  I can take it off of my outraged list and put it on my "Why you should never go to Jersey," list.

We have a drinks machine at school that dispenses hot tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc.

I ordered a "hot chocolate" from it this morning, returned to where I was working and left it to cool slightly.

Took a sip and very much to my surprise, it wasn't hot chocolate at all. It was coffee. I very slightly completely detest the taste of coffee, personal taste and all that.

Turns out, I had pushed the wrong button. However I spent the entire morning thinking someone had put coffee in the wrong place in the machine.

Well, that's 30p I will never see again.
