Solid Snake first appeared in the original Metal Gear, not Metal Gear 2, and that game came out a year or two on the MSX before being ported to the NES.

Yes, I know. I meant that my mental image of MG to MG2 was correct but MG2 to MGS was not, so I got both MG and MG2 later than they actually were.

Gotcha. I thought that you were sharing in a misunderstanding I've encounterd before IRL, where a few people thought that the obscure "Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake" featured the debut of Solid Snake, and the first game's protagonist was a different character just named "Snake". The horrible manual typical of early NES games (which were generally not translations of the original, but locally produced, often "wacky" story explanations that had nothing to do with the game) and the great delay in releasing the real Metal Gear 2 as opposed to "Snake's Revenge" contributed to this.
