Actually the mitochondrion is an organelle, with it's own DNA, proteins and ribosomes. This has led to the creation of a theory that it was actually once a bacteria but both the cell and the mitochondria have evolved so as the mitochondrion is now an organelle of the cell. Basically what it does is it takes oxygen and glucose to synthesise ATP molecules via cellular breathing.

It also has a double membrane.

What also makes it an interesting research subject, is that is is only inherited over the maternal line. While an embryonic cell gets about half of it's father's cell core DNA, and half of it's mother's, from gametes prodoced through meiosis, it will inherit 100% of the oval cell's mitochondrial DNA (in other words, barring mutation, your mitochondrial DNA is 100% the same as your mother's). The sperm's mitochondrial DNA is either lost when penetrating the oval cell, or broken down by it.

This also implies it is an excellent research subject for paleo-geneticists. Genes dating back to the very first origins of transition from prokaryotic cells to eukaryotic cells can very well still be present in our very own mitochindrial DNA.

That swirled away last week I think. That being said, it's really cool here (Ottawa) today. This time of year is usually sweltering and humid as hell, but the weather this year has just been nuts. So maybe the polar vortex is back? (Weather terms are getting more insane.)
