You're thinking of the worng kind of pub
See, we have food pubs, where you get chips and food etc with drink being secondary.
Then there are the drinking pubs, where the food served ranges from crisps to peanuts, and not much else.
And then they occasionally blend the two to great confusion, and contempt from either types regulars towards the other side.

And +1 for Britain. Just not down south anywhere. They're chippies don't serve gravy and yet they have the cheek to consider themselves more civilised than us Northerners.

But seriously, mixing the two seems like a good idea to me. In fact, pubs here often do something similar, serving hearty, simple pub food whilst also offering plenty of beers and booze... I always assumed they were imitating the classic British pub. This is rather disturbing to learn.

I just had the thought of how brilliant it would be to find someone arguing about racism, go in with the 'I'm not a racist, but...' line, then says something actually not-racist.
'I'm not a racist, but I think everyone should have equal rights'
They'd probably look at me confused.

Why would they be confused since both statements corroborate?

Pubs actually sound like cool places. Go there for a drink and actually eat too instead of having to go to a restaurant before... unfortunately Florida decided that any place that sells more than a tiny bit of food has to be a no smoking area regardless of whether the owner wants it to be or not, so they would probably not be as popular as the real bars.
