If what my English teacher says is true then Beowulf is a Jesus expy, so that's not to far off the mark.

The point being that most of the characteristics of Jesus as described within the religion are pretty much identical to characteristics attributed to somewhere between scores and hundreds of other prophets & deities. It's much easier to crib from other peoples' mythology than to invent an entirely original one.

Plus its really hard to do something original and new, what with human history having gone on for so long. Not to mentionbthe times where mythologies try to inherit the previous religion's followers or try to combine already existing religions.

Then how is it an accurate representation of religion? If what it was meant to depict is true, then over several thousand years, it is no longer true, because it is no longer what it was meant to depict.

In other words, why trust the Bible if it is so edited?

The whole point of the Christian religion is that it's absolutist. If the facts change what is the validity of it? That makes the Ten Commandments relative, which they blatantly are not meant to be. If religion were seen merely as a flexible ideology, then that is fine. But it isn't, so why not cut out the middle man, judge your own moral actions as accordant to your culture and personality, and if these moral acts are wrong be punished by the law. The point of religion is that it's meant to be correct, and not change. It is fine seeing them as a set of rules, but these rules are meant to be from a constant source, and not change. If the rules change according to humanity, what need have we of divinity?
