They should stage riots so Russia would come and liberate them.

Apparently the right wingers in the state I live in want the state to secede from the United States, Wat.

Are you even allowed to secede from the United States?

I mean the entire American Civil war was pretty much based around that.

Fun fact: there are secession movements in all 50 states. Admittedly, most of them don't get so far as to hold a convention vote tying an entire state political party to that sentiment (loltastic, BTW) but there you have it. There are also several movements for certain areas to secede from their state (western Maryland, eastern Oregon, Orange County CA, the Michigan UP, etc.)

I think the basic idea is legal(though why'd it matter once you're a nation is another question) I don't envision a second civil war over one of today's hot topics and it being legalized/banned, IE gay marraige(though that was wrapped up?) and marijuana.

I'm not the best in modern events and honestly, I'm trying to catch up :P

Yeah, while Gay marriage and marjuana are polarizing issues, there is no distinct line of separation between regions on the issue like there was for slavery.

SCOTUS declared it unconstitutional, iirc. So, not legal.

As far as I learned about US, their constitution allows seceding of the states via... guess what? Referendum.

Nope, the Constitution does not allow secession of states at all. And what's wrong with referendums?

They'd probably manage with a referendum, though. Problem being, it would likely have to be a 2/3rds or better majority of the actual state population -- instead of just people that decide to vote that day -- and... never mind actually getting 2/3rds of any state to agree on anything, you don't get that kind of voter turn out in the states. Ever. Especially in anything larger than, maybe, a single small town.

By the way, as far as it looks like I don't know it very well, can someone gimme a link to download American constitution?

About referendum - I came from USSR politics thread where Crimean referendum discussion went into flame war, like, two times already.

That's not because of the referendum in and of itself, but the surrounding context, absurd result of Soviet-style 97%, and the options (or lack of options) on said referendum.

Wouldn't be as much uproar over it if it had been a little less sketchy.

Not to say the US would be happy about a clean and transparent Scottish-style referendum in the US states, but they wouldn't have as much holes to point as as a Crimean-style would have.

Nononono, I won't even discuss that once again. Just because we have politics threads for that kind of stuff, and this is WTF thread.
