I, personally, would not call everything about Catholicism sensible, but I'm not going to go into scripture. I'm just pointing to how they let themselves get led by the nose by an obviously corrupt Vatican.
Certainly not everything! Not even most things endorsed by the Church! But the Catholics themselves are generally pretty chill about religion.
Yeah, when you're only considering the liberal, suburban, cafeterian ones. Now, when you go to Liberation Theologists, OCC, Opus Dei, and groups that practice mortification of the flesh...

A lot of Christians, especially homeschooled ones, take a rather dim view of the U.N., conspiracy theory or not. Endorsing euthanasia I'm not sure about, but I distinctly remember some of the other things they talked about. I will research further.

Heck the Komodo Dragon and how its bite works makes me seriously question how qualified several scientists are.
I think that the komodo dragon thing is more excusable than many other things. It's about finding a small, unknown gland inside of the jaw musculature of animals that are either awkwardly small for dissection or too large and potentially damaging for lab life, that don't really relate to the rest of the body. Once they realised it was there, they were able to find venom glands for numerous other species of lizard.

Less excusable when the infection excuse is easily tested.

Ohh and how can we forget shaken baby syndrome. Evidence that you can get anything accepted in science. So long as you have clout.

I think it's an argument in support of science that we got it wrong and then, with further study, learned more and got it right. People make mistakes; the process ends up working eventually. We're learning more all the time and there's an incentive to overturn bad research. Unlike shamans passing down myths unquestioningly.

Yes, that sounds plausible and no one should question that. (there's a joke hidden in that :P)
I agree though.

In other news:
I was reading this article about greatest movies never made.

And I come to this movie called Ronnie Rocket...in which David Lynch was involved.

I read the plot.

*mind-explode*

Ya see, I'm not new to Lynch, I've seen his work before...but I guess he's just one of those directors who can constantly surprise me with his outlandish ideas.

Ah David, you magnificent lunatic.

Yes, let's get a living and potentially-dangerous cow attacked by a huge slathering and rare lizard within a sterile environment, and hope that the animal rights activists don't show up. :P

Pretty sure they're not the majority though. Well, certainly not the majority in Europe. Additionally, Wikipedia tells me that many of the criticisms against Opus Dei are invented. Sure, there're some crazy people among them, and the entire thing is quite controversial in the Vatican, but there're worse people. I mean, they only tend to hurt themselves.

Anyway, Opus Dei is about 100 000 people, OCC doesn't look to crazy (or I got the wrong link. It's some sort of Christian College, right?) , Liberation Theology seems actually positive on first glance and mortification of the flesh is rather limited. Also:
Quote
Catholic moral theologians recommend that the scrupulous not practice mortification, avoid persons and materials of an ascetical nature, and receive frequent spiritual direction and psychological help.

Quote from: Liberation Theology
One of the most radical aspects of liberation theology was the social organization, or re-organization, of church practice through the model of Christian base communities (CBCs). Liberation theology strove to be a bottom-up movement in practice, with Biblical interpretation and liturgical practice designed by lay practitioners themselves, rather than by the orthodox Church hierarchy. In this context, sacred text interpretation is understood as "praxis". Liberation theology seeks to interpret the actions of the Catholic Church and the teachings of Jesus Christ from the perspective of the poor and disadvantaged. In Latin America, liberation theologians specifically target the severe disparities between rich and poor in the existing social and economic orders within the nations' political and corporate structures. It is a strong critique of the various economic and social structures, such as an oppressive government, dependence upon First World countries and the traditional hierarchical Church, that allow some to be extremely rich while others are unable to even have safe drinking water.
Really, doesn't seem to be that bad right. Criticize the wealthy, take from them and give to the poor. Really, it's just Socialism/Marxism with a biblical context.

I think it's an argument in support of science that we got it wrong and then, with further study, learned more and got it right. People make mistakes; the process ends up working eventually. We're learning more all the time and there's an incentive to overturn bad research. Unlike shamans passing down myths unquestioningly.
With the difference that myths and shamans never tried to explain scientific phenomena, you're mostly right. It's a common misconception that myths and other tales are some sort of primitive form of science. They really aren't.

Studying the situation in which these are told, their main purpose is to reinforce coming of age ceremonies and all that stuff.

Stupid wineskin cat just savaged mom's hands for poking it. Mom's currently chasing the cat, dripping blood all over the apartment and swearing to strangle the cat once she catches her.

Unsure if amused or terrified.

Test the corpse or test the mouth of the Komodo dragon.

Which in fact some people did do and discovered that its mouth is no more "exceptionally infectious" then any other predator.

No it is an argument that "science" wasn't done. It was just people making crud up and the scientific community going "Is that true? What you have no evidence? Good enough for us!"

At least with revisionist history there is an excuse that people are actively subverting history and passing along untruths. With this non-science it is just stupidity.

Re: shamans

I think you'll find that myths typically explain natural phenomena that people had no way to really investigate at the time. Once we could test whether Zeus was throwing lightning down or not, we started to get closer to how things actually worked.

Myths also exist to reinforce social mores, prescribe or proscribe behavior, etc. A dietary restriction that some foods are unholy or unclean may have been good advice in a time before refrigeration and germ theory. Having a shaman bless your food is a great way to make sure the oldest and wisest guy in the village has a chance to look over your food and tell you whether it'll kill you to eat it. But that's a very different thing from saying the blessing of the food has some special significance.

Let's talk about the poop in your avatar. Are we to assume the dog retracts the poop, or it leaps back up his butt, or should we assume that it's actually just supposed to show footage in forward and reverse?
