Could be for hunting, some people don't like hunting with rifles. Or he could just like crossbows.

Using a crossbow is a pretty different experience from using a rifle. Could be that rifle hunting is illegal in the caliber he owns and he's fixing that.

He mentioned he wanted a crossbow to hunt deer with, but using rifles to hunt is legal if you get the right permit.

With exceptions to handguns and fully automatic weapons.

E: He is a bit of a prepper though. Thinks the world is going to end but nobody but him knows it.

So apparently Caught A Lite Sneeze is about trying to hold onto a relationship despite knowing that it's ending. Huh, that's pretty mundane. Ever since I heard it I'd been convinced it's about AIDs. Ya know what? I'm going to invoke Death of the author and keep that interpretation.
