On the other hand, we'll have a whole new continent to colonize, without any pesky natives to muck up the moral issues.

Oh, you know. Enslavement, oppression, exploitation, genocide, decimation. The usual.

If there aren't any natives, hell even any native wild-life (Penguins. That's it. And I doubt they'd survive such a huge change. They might, they're not -all that- dependent on it being cold, but still, change is change) then there's not the chance for that.

Of course, being humans, we'd certainly find a way to be shitty to each other while colonizing a suddenly-warm Antarctica. Probably import people to work to death in the fields and airports. :I

Isn't the weather such a wonderful thing?

Unbeknownst to us laymen, the planet is flipping over or some shit. We're all going to die. The jackass pengiuns, jackasses as they be, will soon be having fun sunbathing in equatorial Antarctica.

You talking about the magnetic pole shift or whatever? It would seriously screw up modern society, but there is a good chance humanity would survive. :P Or better yet, evolve some more.

Now that's just biased thinking there. Just because the prevailing atmosphere seems like something doesn't mean everyone in any kind of situation believes and acts like that. >_> That's being narrowminded.

Well, our historical antecedent for "Colonizing a (nearly) virgin wilderness" is colonizing the Americas. After the disease-decimation of the natives, I mean. Guess what we did? Buy whole ship-loads of enslaved Africans and tug them across the ocean? We sure did!

And in terms of TODAY, well slavery hasn't exactly gone away, it's just gone underground. And you can be "paid" and still be basically a slave, just look at the workers in Dubai. Paid a pittance of what they were promised, barely enough to live on, working in the desert heat for 12 hour days, in a city that, because of the boom, is WAY too expensive to live in for them so they live in slums on the outskirts.

You can bet your ass that a whole new continent would have that kind of thing happening all over it. It might be mitigated by the fact that we'd need to make it livable, basically terraforming it from barren rock, but then again it might be worsened by that. Can't exactly run away when there's no place to run to. (which is why the Dubai workers can't really run away. Nowhere to run but ocean or desert, need a plane or a boat to get away, and those take money)

The fact of the matter is that humans obviously tend to migrate towards 'Lawful' and 'Good' on the alignment chart as far as ideals go, but they're more of a weak Neutral Good/True Neutral in practice. There are indeed lots of evil people out there, but the main trend is toward good, because otherwise, in fiction, the prevailing theme would be the triumph of the strong over the weak, evil winning out against good. Sound theory?

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

My joke actually was meant to imply that the continents' positions relative to the axis of the earth's rotation would change, such that antarctica would be revolving around the equator, whilst other parts of the globe (I dunno, Central America?) would be at the north pole, with the world revolving around it.
The simple magnetic pole shift would be a pain in the ass for the purposes of navigation and probably an excuse for the world's crazies to start flailing their "the end is nigh!" signs, but as I learned in my geology classes those do not imply mass extinctions of any concern, so there is apparently almost no threat to living creatures. Maybe a bout of cancer or something if for whatever reason the magnetosphere fails to shield us from external radiation sources during that time, but we aren't going to explode.
