What is it with people preaching on the internet, and every time they type GOD or a synonym of such, they put it in all caps? It makes everything read like someone who can't control their excitement and randomly starts shouting.

In English Bibles, the Hebrew phrase YHWH is generally translated as THE LORD (technically, it is usually THE LORD, but small caps are a lot of extra work online) in keeping with the Jewish tradition of not using His name (or more accurately, any of His many names) directly. Many don't actually realize why this is (the intent is to underscore the indirect address), and assume that He is supposed to be addressed in all caps. It is related to the common use of G-d to reference Him, as most Christians seem to be unaware of His names and think that "God" is His proper one.

This is distinct from the practice of capitalizing even the pronouns used to refer to Him, along with the otherwise generic word "god". This is a form of respect, and also to impress which One you are talking about.

Volume when speaking of him also helps attract his attention. I wouldn't reccommend it though, last I checked he was a paranoid ass with abandonment issues and insatiable ambition.

I much prefer...

Uhm...

... Well, almost all the gods and minor deities of history were kind of trash.

Except Satan. Satan was a cool bro. I'd chill with Satan.

I dunno. There are a few that seem like bros. Like Buddha.

Buddha's alright, though I'm not sure if that's his real name.
I'm out, trust me on that.

Buddha wasn't a deity, he was an enlightened human.

Satan is an honorary human. He's got some good human qualities, we can bring him along. The other gods can go hang, though.

Eh, Buddism's kinda crazy. It's all about committing spiritual suicide. Blowing out your own candle flame, and whatnot.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Not quite - it's about the process of dying and reincarnating so much that eventually you've done literally everything you could've done, and then reaching a state of pure null forever.
At least from my understanding of it. It could be interpreted that way.

I laughed.

While on this topic of God and religion, I've been watching a Facebook debate on the ages of people in the Bible being real. As in Noah and whatever living for 900+ years.

Everyone in the post is absolutely convinced the Bible is a literal story about the way things used to be. The whole thing, literal. Hard, cold, facts.

Call me cynical and whatever, but a book that is "the word of God" as written and edited by man over thousands of years and countless languages will have some error, author/translator bias, etc etc etc. Can't get involved with their debate, cuz we all know what happens when you argue with Christians about their faith.

(I am religious, sort of. Just feel that God is more of a force outside our understanding, and gets a kick out of watching things happen. Kind of like eldritch horror / Dark Souls god-beings. Maybe all-powerful, masters of stuff and all, but really don't care about a infinitesimal black speck on a tiny blue speck in the cosmos-at-large.)

Eh, I guess he could use counselling. His heart's in the right place, trying to give humans knowledge, "tempting" people away from an abusive father figure, that kind of thing.

One of my favourite "religious" stories, about reincarnation and connected to what Xantalos said about Buddhism, is this one.

As a Christian, this is true and the reason I take any old testament stuff (And even some of the new testament stuff) worth a pillar of salt. I think it's true for the most part , but saying it's immutably God's Word is pretty ignorant. Seriously: Just read Song of Solomon and tell me God said that.

And yeah, I don't bring this up around someone unless I can trust them to be reasonable. Just don't assume that all Christians are like that. It's mostly the ones who don't want to hear anything other than an echo of their own opinions.
