Got a bill in the mail. Apparently I owe four cents worth of interest on my credit card. Despite having completely paid it off at the end of Summer.

Where did the interest come from?

send them a 5 cent payment, so they'll have to send you a check for 1 cent later.

But then you'll get interest on that 1 cent, and they'll send you a bill of a fraction of a penny.

What puzzles me is that sending you a paper bill costs them more that four cents... Why would they bother? Unless it's e-mail in which case it costs them nothing.
I agree with the 5 cent payment, they'll be obligated by law to reimburse your cent, and that'll cost them more than four cent :P

I'm suddenly getting ads everywhere, and I don't know from where. It has to be something someone downloaded, but I have no idea what it is. Dammit, this is why you don't download random shit people.

Edit: Got the little bastard. It was hiding in Program Files. Now to scan and make sure nothing else got through.
I recommend HijackThis and SUPERAntiSpyware. What's it called?

Try Malwarebytes as well. It saved me from a really nasty fake AV ransomware this spring.

I am getting to the point where I am going to need to read an analysis of cyberbullying laws.

The first thing I know of is that all cyberbullying laws were illegal before the laws were passed. Harassment online is just as illegal as harassment in real life, you aren't supposed to publically display pictures of someone who hasn't given you permission, and all that jazz.

Yet when a law sort of "Doubles up" on a previous law there are generally three reasons for this

1) It is there to make charges easier (Breaking and entering is this)
2) It is there to make the charges harsher (Hate Laws are this.)
3) Shortening the trial period by eliminating proof requirements.

I guess what is worrying me about cyberbullying laws is because I am afraid they will go too far. It is always centered around people who have committed suicide and yet I "know" that someone who is mentally unstable can commit suicide for little provocation. There is less talk about how these laws make sense and need to be passed and more talk about how there are victims.

So I have to look at it like this. Logical prose on these laws isn't going to happen because the average person doesn't want to hear how these laws make sense, how they needed to be updated, and how they change the law. They only care about the emotions behind these issues. So my goal is not to be sucked in but rather try to find the buried arguments that are being told somewhere else. It shouldn't be the case that they will take cyberbullying laws and create internet wide censorship or the eliminating of people being able to keep their identity online secret. It is simply a emotion based coverage of laws that were probably being drawn up for years not based around suicide but based around adapting harassment and privacy laws for the internet.

---

Here is a short form

I am worrying over nothing. The reason why the media is focused on the victim side of cyber bullying is not because these laws are being passed in reaction to these tragedies but because these new laws make sense and allow the law to more easily react to internet based crimes. The media is just sensationalizing as usual because that is what draws the most interest.

Wow, it looks like everyone on Github got some attempt at breaking into their account. Github reset all the passwords due to a large amount of account hijacks, and I can see why. They brute-forced the hell out of it. I have 5 failed logins from various suspicious locations (like Venezuela).

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Has anyone noticed that in Harry Potter when you first started hearing about the Wizard World you were all "Ooooh ahhh" and then the more and more you hear the less you are wowed and the more you start to say "Wow, wizard world sucks!"?

I mean... Even back in the first book I realized that the two most popular candies were dreadful! one being a living frog made of chocolate (Cruelty in every bite!) and the other being a Jellybean that RARELY tasted really good.

This is before I even get into the constant racism, the crazy backwards laws, the lack of safety for ANYONE, or the booby-traps in easily accessible locations. (and all this for the first book).

And Hogwarts is one of the good ones...

hmmm

I read Anne Rice's witch novels before I read Harry Potter.  I spent the four books I did read wondering how the dark design's of John Carpenter or Anne Rice didn't make it into Hogwarts.

I've always understood it as a way to explain why the witches and wizards doesn't really find anything cool. I mean, even the progression in the book kind of simulates Harry's attitude to it. Everything started interesting but then quickly went to horrifying.

I always thought that was kinda the point. It shows the progression into adulthood as Harry got more use to the wizard world and became more closely entangled in its conflicts. And also loss of innocence and growing cynicism and such
