Some of the best endings and most awesome rewards available in Fallout 2 are from doing evil things. Not stupid things, but nonetheless evil things. Like rebuilding the vault city computer to insure that every future citizen of Vault city is one of your descendants. :3 Heheh.

To be quite fair, "your father left the vault" doesn't carry much weight either

It is enough that trying to find out is interesting. They don't reveal everything very early like they do in New Vegas.

It wasn't "My Dad is Missing" that pushed it initially but rather "why is he missing?". As well when it raises the stakes it is actually a big deal (but then the story devolves, but that is another story).

While New Vegas has nothing going for the main plot. Heck I would even say the stakes don't even get raised.

I would say that New Vegas lacks a central plot. Like a good RPG should IMO, but that's another topic to discuss. It's more of a personal story of Courier and what he/she decides to do with the world. Sidequests get their own endings, and you can choose exactly who will be victorious in the overall battle for the Mojave, while in Fallout 3 you are always forced into working with the Brotherhood of Steel(and if you play Broken Steel, then you are definately not a mercenary). You can even choose to grab power yourself in New Vegas, which is an option that not many games present.

I couldn't finish New Vegas' main story, I got as far as meeting Yes Man and just decided that it was so very much not worth the time and went off to do my own thing, the game became rather more enjoyable after that

Yeah it is that section where the game starts to sort of fall apart.

Fallout 3 is plagued by multiple plot holes and Bethesda putting more emphasis on "cool ideas" rather than ideas that fit within the Fallout universe. Fallout New Vegas has less plot holes, and makes more sense as a whole. Obsidian knew that attention to detail was important, and things in the story had to make sense from an outside perspective. Story wise, even without a centralized and linear plot, NV is far superior to F3 in both gameplay and story.

Yes this is what I HEAR but is what I seriously question in the gameplay department and even the story department with the other stuff.

For example enemies go from "Swarms of enemies using their numbers to overtake you" in Fallout 3... to "Bullet sponges"

Which is an outright downgrade.

Then take the interesting and varied locations of Fallout 3... and throw them out because NV only uses the blandest of the bland. Heck you need expansions in NV to make the game interesting.

Quite a few times I wanted to hit NV over the head for not giving some of their only good ideas more prominent.

There is virtually no differences in the basic gameplay from Fallout 3 to Fallout NV. There are only improvements over the general RPG/FPS hybrid Fallout 3 introduced, and enemies are as big bullet sponges as they were in Fallout 3. Also, when I saw the "Interesting varying locations" of Fallout 3, I was mainly thinking about how stupid and implausible they were from both a lore perspective and common sense perspective. Obsidian did a far better job at staying true to the Fallout lore while still creating an interesting and not as linear story than Bethesda did. Seriously, Bethesda's writing quality has been on a significant decline over the years.

That's pretty much most triple A companies these days. They ask "what made our games, and other people's games, popular?", then they get responses along the lines of "it was epic!", and then they try to imitate things without including the soul of what made those things good in the first place.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Exactly. Bethesda did create some interesting ideas for Fallout 3, but the failed to pay attention to the details. It's easy to make up cool ideas for stuff, everyone has a few. But if you're taking over and re-making a beloved game you need to stay true to the lore, and more importantly common sense.

I was aided by the fact that I had absolutely no faith in Bethesda from the start... So I had none of these expectations of quality.

Which is odd given I tend to have very lofty expectations.

This isn't about liking or not liking Fallout 3... This is mostly a Fallout 3 versus New Vegas deal.

New Vegas didn't have a piece of exploitable DLC that could give you a full set of infinite-durability weapons and a shitload of ammo before you hit level five. So there.

You have to download a house mod instead.
