My cat caught a bird.
My fat cat caught a bird.
Let me put this in perspective. We have 2 cats. One is a smaller female, and she adopted us in 2003. She was estimated to be 1.5-2 yrs old, and she was pregnant with her second litter. We eventually settled on naming her Deedee. Hurricane Isabel hit and the kittens were born premature. Ultimately, the cat in question was the only survivor of the litter. We named him Smeagol. Being premature, he was tiny. This did not last long. He quickly became rather large and very fat. Deedee remained trim and in good shape. She has always been known to catch a lot of stuff and present to us her trophies. Smeagol, not so much. One day, we were digging up a pipe in the front yard and snagged ourselves a little mole. It was pudgy and could barely squirm around when it wasn't digging through dirt. Smeagol was just chilling on the porch, and we decided he might like it. He cuffed at it a couple times and then just lost interest entirely. It was pathetic. Because of this, we chalked him up as being a complete wimp, incapable of hunting. Today, he is about 9.5 years old. He brought a live black bird to the porch. This ruled out any chance he simply stole it from Deedee (he seemed to be doing that lately), as she would have at least made sure it couldn't move. This cat is well over 20 pounds and is terrified of new people.
Strangely enough, we suspect that, at least for a good while, he was the alpha cat in the neighborhood, though he never hunted anything.
The bird got away, though. I think he just wanted to show us that he could catch stuff, but didn't really want to eat or kill it. He didn't lose grip of the bird until after I saw it.
