If a person makes a Bondage thread, and then says "No sexual stuff guys, but I'm not going to tell you what to discuss", then what are people supposed to talk about? The leather industry? Then why can't it just be called "The Leather thread"?
That wasn't what the derail was about
Yeah but it was kinda the root.
"Furry" has sexual baggage, earned or not. If the OP didn't want people to immediately go to that she/he should have called it something less provoking to derails and trolls.
I was trying not to get involved again... but I said this in the old furry thread, and I'll say it again here. Furries are not inherently sexual deviants; for most of them, it is not a sexual thing. It's little different than saying all Anime fans are into Tentacle Hentai and blow-up-dolls, rather than recognizing that they are not the same things. A square may inherently be a rectangle, but a rectangle isn't inherently a square.
In my experience with the fandom (I'm not a member, but have joined a friend for 2 conventions, and had positive experiences) the majority of con-goers were normal people in silly hats who liked animation, and decided to pick cartoon animals as their focus. There was a small subset of the fandom that had animal RP characters they portrayed on internet boards, and requested art of them at conventions. A fraction of this small subset were interested in the deviance you're talking about. And most of those people were given a wide berth, even within the fandom. I think we see more of them on the internet, because it's the internet.
However, there's something about the fandom that I learned from my experience. There's a pervasive attitude of "Acceptance at all costs," not criticizing people for their quirks no matter how weird. Members of the fandom will defend almost anyone else in it, for whatever they're interested in. They're afraid of ostracizing some people, lest they themselves be ostracized in return... even if they just like drawing anthropomorphic fanart of Scar from the Lion King, because they think he's an awesome villain.
TL;DR - The actual problem with the Furry Fandom is that they're accepting, to a fault.
