The first. There's a memorial in one of the parks to someone who was killed by Christians during the conflict. It's one of the more subdued elements of SH history, which isn't surprising considering what the Silent Hill Cult gets up to.

I was really impressed with the Silent Hill movie.  Keep in mind that I've never played any of the games, but have seen plenty of screenshots/clips/concept art and regularly listen to the soundtracks.  It may have failed in the writing (I wouldn't know since I'm only vaguely familiar with the game lore), but I thought it was very strong and pioneering, even, in its stylistic take on video game to movie adaptation.  The visuals and music were great, but the thing that got me the most was the cinematography style.  They used lots of fixed shots with camera angles and cut pacing very reminiscent of the views a player would have while playing that style of adventure game.  I'd like to see more such films experiment that way.  Haven't seen the second one yet, but I plan on it and hope it built on those same elements.
