My roommate stupidly watched a cartel execution video he found on Facebook and is now freaking out. He still doesn't believe me about the extent of cartel power in Mexico.

While I lived in Guatemala, I knew a lady who's daughter was crossing the border illegally. The 'boyfriend' who was taking her up was pretty vague on details and rarely answered his phone when the lady called, and hardly ever let her talk to her daughter. After she told us about this, there was a massacre where they killed ~90 people who'd paid them to cross the border into the States.

It was the most I've ever been worried about someone else's welfare. I was freaking out for days until I could talk to the lady again, but apparently her daughter had gotten over safely and hadn't been involved with the folks that'd done the killing.

Gangs in Mexico aren't crap you mess around with.

Ehn. Yeah, I was young and not there for very long (just a few hours), but I still pretty vividly remember the outskirts of one of the towns/cities close to the border, down there. Place looked like somewhere that'd been hit by a nuke or somethin'. Couple miles worth of shanty town, iirc. Cardboard shelters and suchlike. Realize the states have stuff like that, too, but we tend to hide it better up here

USA's got its problems, but it's a bit of a land o'milk and honey in comparison to that. Maybe it wasn't representative of the whole country, but...
