They were rather shitty as I remember.
A full one was dedicated as how to put the cd in your computer and installing the game. And the manual was generally a bit of fluff with the hotkeys.
I remember Civilization III, that was one Fat Manual. Info on every civ and what they can do...
Then there was the Console games and their Instruction Manuals. They used to fill in some story not told by the game initially. Now you have to sit through cut scenes telling ya who this guy is...
The Civ IV manual was absolutely massive. I also remember that the Guild Wars manual had a short story in it about some of the background characters.

That was only really in the last few years of paper manuals. Up until the early CD era (which is when manuals began to die, except as a PDF on the CDROM), you'd usually get a manual the size of a paperback book, which had the game's backstory, play instructions, character profiles, and (in the earliest era) all the text in the game.

I also miss paper manuals. Hell, I've still got the technical and cultural briefing from Homeworld and reread it occasionally. That, and the Prima guide, which was fairly funny as such things go. There's something quite special about them, even if it's usually easier to just go to the relevant wiki for information.

I loved me thar brick manuals!

One of the first ones I remember is probably Civilization(the first one), which had precious little game-related information included, but instead had a Discovery Channel-style introduction to the history of mankind.

Another one was Burntime's ~200 page ecology treatise + maybe five pages of interface tips.

Or Stars! with its page upon page of mathematical formulas for calculating mass driver damage and missile defence systems effectiveness.

The last instance of me getting a paper brick was the well written, 300 pages of 100% useful information, spiral-bound Dominions 3 manual.

Great for killing flies.

I have to get Dominions 3 someday...

My favorite game books were the Starcraft and Diablo 2 manuals.

If you have extra shaving cream, freeze a can and cut it open, then let it thaw in the room of someone you dislike.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

WHAT THE HELL AM I LOOKING AT!?!?!?

I have no idea, but I know that ants, like honeypot ants, and mosquitoes will concentrate their liquid foods by dehydrating them and excreting the excess water. I haven't heard of this in bees and I'm too lazy to do any more research beyond reading the wikipedia article on bumble bees, which also doesn't mention this behaviour, but my best guess is that they do the same thing to concentrate the nectar they gather, reducing it's volume and thus allowing them to transport more.

So I checked sup/tg/ and someone actually managed to run a fight using the FATAL system. No, seriously. Thankfully, RAW didn't allow for rape in this situation.

Russian gamer posts perfect game of snake to reddit. Probably done with some kind of bot, but who cares. I have me a new avatar.

I just stared at that for about 5 minutes.
What a greedy bugger. It could do it much easier if it slowed down progress a bit by optimizing the pattern for safety. Just go up and down in vertical bars, leaving 1 row at the bottom to return to the start position, then repeat until you've eaten enough to win.
Oh, so that's how all those high-scorers in Neopets did that one game about eating eggplant-shaped items called neggs.

Why is it that seemingly EVERYONE has played Neopets at one point in their life.

Neopets was super-popular at one point. I think McDonald's even had a line of Happy Meal toys based on them at one point (or maybe I just imagined it.)

FATAL is a stupidly-complex, generally terrible game full of misogyny, racism, and anal circumference rolls. It's basically irredeemable, so it's remarkable that anyone would bother doing anything with it (and they only did so because it's so famously terrible that doing such a thing is somewhat remarkable.)
