Working in the industry that I do, finding Advance Reader's Copies of books, even old ones, isn't too unusual. It's even quite nice, as the company doesn't sell them, so we can usually take them for free if we want them, even if the book isn't out yet. So I didn't think anything of it when I came across an ARC of Kirsty's Big Idea - Babysitter's Club #1. Until, at least, I say the "Coming in 2003 blurb on the cover. I don't even think it was a rewritten version, although the only BSC book I ever read was one that my grandmother mistook for a Boxcar Children book, and that was the only book I had that weekend.

I had the strangest thought ever...

What would the implications be if superpowers were transmissible as an STD?

Superheroes would no longer have to worry about the question "Where do they get their money if they are superheroing full time?"

Probably at the cost of higher levels of incompetent super vigilante-ism and half baked supervillains.

Well I imagine that at first who ever was the first instant of this STD would have no reasonable way to know that their super powers were transmissible, and thus would at one point transfer them to instance 2.
Now everything depends on their relationship. If for the rest of their lives they have an exclusive relationship, then the world gets two super heros and that is the end of it.
If, however, it spread to a third instance, we will have most likely hit a critical point where the world will sooner or later become infected. Thus everybody has super powers.

If everyone has superpowers (the same I assume, as they're transmissible), would it still be superpowers ? Wouldn't it be simple abilities ?

Are we also assuming that mothers pass this STD onto their children?
If not then 'Show us your thermo-vision!' would become a somewhat popular phrase in schoolyards.

If it ever got to the point where the power existed in the majority of the human population, then yes, it would cease to be "super".

Still an improvement, of course.

Quote from: Chesterton
For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I'm not sure everyone shooting fireballs would be an improvement  :-\

Being able to shoot fireballs > not being able to shoot fireballs.

Yes, but in the same vein as any other successful mutation. We don't think of our obscene capacity for endurance running (or opposable thumbs, etc.) as abnormal or super, but by comparative standards it/they is/are. Superpowers are only super as long as they are restricted to a limited minority.

That aside, I sort of agree with PanH on the fireball bit.
