I get those too, actually.

Those are intrusive thoughts, GlyphGryph. There's even a word for it in French: L'appel du vide (The call of the void).

I sometimes get the urge to say... Very messed up things to people. Then I forget if I said that thing or not, so I have a momentary panic attack where I'm like, "Oh god, did I say that?" Then I'm like, "Nah, they didn't leave or punch me in the face, we're cool."

And I get violent intrusive thoughts fairly often. Some of them are actually pretty cool, like, "Suddenly that guy pulls a gun and takes that chick hostage, and I fucking kill the fuck out of him with my box cutter." Which sounds bad, but, hero fantasy!

Oh, wait! I just realized that when I go hypomanic I get FUCKTONS of intrusive thoughts. And not the good kind that you can just ignore either. o_____o

But it's the affection kind not the violent kind, so that's still good at least. Though having the overwhelming urge to give people an extremely inappropriate huge kiss is weeeeeird.

The jumping/escape thoughts are an obvious response to high stress periods. The hypomanic stuff is just seemingly random.

Got my roommate to finally wash the refrigerator with bleach, eliminating the persistent smell of putrid rotten venison. He apparently thought he could just starve the bacteria out once the meat was removed. I pointed out that he had started storing his other food in the freezer, giving them an easy food source, and that the cold would slow them down enough that they could persist for a while.

It's finally clean, now just to see if he gets horrifically ill from having stored his food in the same space as whatever unimaginable bacteria were feasting on that meat.

Most of my Intrusive Thoughts are affectionate/sexual (I blame biology, and a fairly persistent libido), but I do sometimes get violent or suicidal ones too. When I catch myself having them, I make a game of trying to subvert them into something benign or hilarious.

Just driving down the road during a rainstorm. Hey, someone's walking on the shoulder of the road. YOU SHOULD SWERVE AND HIT THEM WITH YOUR CAR. Then, you can take them to the hospital and out of the rain, bond over the incident, become best friends, and when Winter rolls around you can start a curling club together!

...but mostly, fuck you whatever part of my evolutionary history decided that spontaneous urges to do unconscionable things would be a useful feature. Like seriously, do you even have a point there?

I've heard some hypothesizing that they may be a consequence of free will. Specifically, your lizard brain repeatedly realizes that thanks to mammal brain, it can do whatever it wants and tells you to do something you won't. I don't really buy into that, but the idea is out there.

Personally? I think it's a kind of emergency action system that keeps extreme events in reserve so you can act if you need to. I think this because in my intrusive thoughts, which are near 100% violent, it all comes down to the sudden ambuHE DOESN'T SUSPECT A THING, SMASH HIS FOOT AND JAM THE SCISSORS THROUGH HIS EYES.

Basically, I think it keeps me prepared to kill everyone around me at all times just in case I need to.

I do have some non-violent intrusive thoughts, but they're weird. They technically qualify as blasphemous, but being non-religious, they end up being what I've called anti-blasphemous, in which I have a sudden existential fear over the existence of a deity and a desire to become religious. Of course, this has no more sway over me than scissors-through-the-eyes voice does.

I'd say that the evolutionary basis for the blasphemous thoughts are similar, but instead of killing everyone it is about being prepared to break with societal standards or your own viewpoint in the event of a crisis. It is thus more accurately described as taboo thoughts than blasphemous ones, religion just comes up a lot.

The only truly AWOL part of my brain is the one that keeps making me stare at sheep.

Clearly it is biding its time, gathering strength until the moment is right for it to sieze control.
I prescribe a steady diet of squat thrusts. Oh and pomelo juice. I always forget the goddamn pomelo juice... Stupid pomelos.

The only calls of the void I've had have been ones about me wondering what would happen if I threw x book or x document into any body of water. Not sure how that would prepare me for anything really.
