That's mainly due to drawing parallels with the way things are often perceived in the real world, where, the further back you go, the more people you find that think magic is real.

Or because the old magic was more advanced and the new magic is the current civ catching up to the previous one.

One of the more fascinating implications of the facet-meta model of the arcane is the presents of wild magics in our world. These magics seem almost alien in contract to our more familiar elemental magics, however, careful analysis has shown that wild magics are in fact composed of elemental magics operating in vastly complex woven spells. The complexity of these spells is suspect to be a cause for inelegance, leading to mistakes, change, mutation and ultimately, evolution.
Recent finds at isolated chrono-distortions seems to validate this hypothesis. Evidence suggests that the common golem, backbone of many guilds, is distantly related to the wild and destructive stone elemental. While skeptics question how the spell for the creation of such an intrinsically destructive construct would suddenly become the useful worker known as the golem, the answer is that small changes to summoning glyphs would over time accumulate into what we recognize today.
These same skeptics will continue to argue that it is improbable that the random mis-copies made by summoners could amount to a more useful version of a construct, but this to can be rationally explained. When a summoner makes a mistake that causes the entity in question to be more violent, the summoned being will likely kill its summoner, thus that summoner does not live on to teach others the used glyphs, but should a summoner make a beneficial mistake then the summoner will often gleefully publish their findings to the wider public, leading to the success of more obedient summons and, over time, turning the violent stone elemental into the quiet golem.

No drawing parallels between evolution and magic! Bad things happen when that happens!

My friend just came up with this story idea, out of the blue:

Teleborian Phillipe. Half Swedish/Spanish consult to the King of Sweden, begins partaking in extra-marital relations with a penguin's carcass.
Meanwhile, in order to further his position in the Swedish royal family, he begins his own bean fermentation faculty beneath the royal court, hoping to pass on the foul tasting alcoholic beverages for favour amongst the nobles.
However, a fire breaks out, and he is forced to hurl his beloved penguin carcass at the king in order to prevent him from being immolated.
As it quickly transpires, in royal Swedish law decreed centuries ago, those that shall throw the carcass of any non-flying bird at the King shall henceforth become the new ruler.
And so Teleborian becomes the new King of Sweden and all ends happily ever after until his wife discovers his dead penguin fetish, having discovered the king's semen covered saviour while cleaning up the burnt husk of the royal palace.
And as we all know, as is customary in Sweden, if a member of royalty has had extra-marital affairs, be it man or beast, they can either step down from power or fight their spouse to the death in a one on one sword fight, above a tiger pit.
And so Teleborian must make the toughest choice of his life? Fight his once beloved wife to the death or abdicate from power?

Teleborian, led by his new taste for power, takes the latter option and so begins the fight of his life, above the infamous tiger pits of Sweden.
However, as fate would have it, Teleborian was not favoured by the Gods of Sweden on that fateful day, as his wife brought with her a cunning ploy. In her hands she held an object of Teleborian's feverish desires- the decapitated head of his deceased-penguin lover.
His wife, overcome with marital jealousy and rage, hurls the penguins head into the depths of the pit. Teleborian, his loins desperate for the touch of penguin flesh, dives in after it, only for both man and penguin to be eaten. The tigers would have their fill.

His wife, the victor of the battle, emerges as queen of Sweden and the world would never again see such a cold and bitter rule, leading to Sweden's invasion by American and British coalition forces in a bid for freedom and liberty.

He doesn't look like he's going to stop any time soon!
