Well mother Teresa was actually sort of... eesh... She received many millions of dollars often from rather unscrupulous sources, she took money from some unscrupulous people, including the dictator of Haiti (who she then openly praised), it's been suggested this may have been a sort of cash for publicity thing. Despite receiving so much money, very little of it actually went into the orphanages and hospices she had running. These places also had really horrible conditions, in fact according to one of her ex-nuns this was something she did on purpose because she had this kind of crazy religious obsession with suffering where she felt it brought people closer to god. They discouraged treating people medicinally and left people to live in extremely poor conditions, with little room, privacy, and often only cold baths for hygene. Here's a wikipedia article.

Washington... I'm pretty sure this guy was a huuuugge douche, but a lot of him seems to be shrouded in myth. There is the peculiar triple life he seemed to live as regards to slavery. Publicly he stayed out of the issue or supported it as an institution (as a political thing), privately he'd say that he greatly opposed slavery, but then of course he was a slave owner himself, and one that was, according to some of the letters he's written, not very nice to his slaves. It's sort of an odd triple standard to set for someone that supposedly never told a lie.

As for Ghandi, the biggest thing is that he was really racist. He used to say that Africans were little more than animals in human form, but that Indians were nothing like that. He also did get up to some rather perverse stuff in the bedroom... not exactly stuff I believe makes him a bad person, but it's not exactly what you'd think of him.

That's more like "he was racist, but not classist". Just like there were abolitionists who were racists. Or woman's suffrageists who were racists. Or socialists who were chauvinists. It's certainly not impossible to believe in freedom and equality for one category of people while not holding the same value for another category of people. Hypocritical, perhaps, but not impossible.

Having read up on the history of the women's movement, you see tons of this. Educated white suffragettes who believed in freedom "for all women" but wanted those black serving ladies kept in their proper social role. Marxists that talked of liberating all mankind, but felt women should play a supporting role in the Revolution.
