The parasites and bacterias in it do matter.

The image is also prominent:  you're eating this filthy slab of meat.

I think the bigger WTF is that people love pork (myself included) but don't really think about the bathing habits of pigs. Which is to say, this is an animal that is quite content to submerge most of its body in a river of shit and urine. When people talk about pigs rolling in mud, please understand that that is a euphemism. If you've ever been to a pig farm, you're quite aware that this is not simply a slurry of dirt and water we're talking about. There's a valid reason that a number of cultures consider them unclean animals and why "pig" is considered a slur in many languages.

And yet...soooooo delicious. More proof that the universe has a sense of humor.

Aaaaannnndddd this is the reason I live a pork "lite" life style. A little bacon now and then, maybe some barbecue. But porkchops, pork sandwiches, pork sausage....not what I gravitate toward when I'm hungry.

Yeah, it's a bit like having "filet of Death Star trash compactor monster".  :P

And yes, in areas with poor regulation of feed/habitat, it means undercooked or raw pork can be very dangerous. Trichinosis is virtually unheard of in the United States these days, mostly because we stopped literally feeding pigs shit to eat. In some parts of China and India, they actually build outhouses that have outflow pipes into the pig stys.

That said...North Carolina is awash in a culture of raising pigs and eating pork. There's a notion that you can eat "every part of the pig but the squeal", and I mostly subscribe to that school of thought. Still can't do pickled pigs' feet, though.

I don't get google news sorting system:

For one, news about our own nuclear power plants is to be found in the foreign news section, while domestic news talks about instagram and twitter, top economical news is the launching of Black Ops 2, while the most important message in Science and development is apparently the weather forecast, followed closely be more game news. Entertainment is talking about celibrities and rabbits gathering money for charity, so that's pretty much normal, while the Health category informs us about the latest gruesome diseases, and the fact that lipstick might cause dumbness.

Rage/WTF mix incoming.

So, i'm near where we should stand when waiting for the teacher to come (she was late), and there's a plastic football laying around. Somebody kicks it into a puddle, some other guy goes to get it out. I stand behind him and kick the ball back, it hits his pants (below the knees). This part of his pants is now wet.

Cue "OMFG Y U SO RAEG GUISE HE LIKE ALL RAEG FOR NO REASON AND THEN HE KICK BALL AT LEG AND VERY HURT AND WET OH GOD NOEZ WHY U SO RAEG?".

Later, we are going into another classroom. I bump into him, because the hallway is kinda tight for 20 people all wanting to get in quickly. Apparantly, i tried to tackle him for no reason.

School's done. His calculator falls out of his backpack, along with other stuff (Totally his fault, he didn't blame me. Shouldn't have putten it on the chair.). I pick up my backpack, and realize that i should put my chair on the desk. My backpack is halfway my back and above his calculator. I gently put it down next to it. Guess what happened according to him?

I tought he would react better than a 5 year old.

The fuck is wrong with me?

It seems that I absolutely have no conception of what one does with money other than buy books. I'm currently staring at a bookshelf containing every book I've purchased now in my possession since I left for Finland but four months ago. A translation of Ulysses into Finnish. Alastalon Salissa. A history of jazz. Winston Churchill's six-volume history of World War II. And to top it all off, a 16-volume (and big volumes) 11th edition (1913) with 12th edition supplements Encyclopedia Britannica- at $75, I refused to pass it up.

That's not even counting the crap whose existence I hid from my parents during that period by ordering them to a friend's house- not from a financial standpoint, but we need to move out at the end of this year, and I don't want them to freak out about moving costs. There are about forty books there, including such reads as The Dravidian Languages, The Axiom of Choice, A Grammar of Modern Welsh, a dictionary of Esperanto, a 19th-century pornographic novel, a two-volume history of Sweden, and An Introduction to Topology.

It's madness. At the age of 17, I have never had steady employment and own about 700 books (many inherited, true, but mostly stemming from the fact that I don't spend money on about anything else). And they're all over the place. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, anyone? Fruits Basket? In Search of Lost Time? Finnegans Wake? Teach Yourself Catalan? An Introduction to Axiomatic Set Theory? The entire oeuvre of Jane Jacobs? Collectible Spoons of the Third Reich?

I am secretly proud of myself, but it'll be a problem in college, when I can't just buy books willy-nilly because I'll have nowhere to keep them...

(In b4 anyone tells me to get an e-reader: E-readers are the work of Satan. They are dangerous, sacrilegious abominations and I refuse to possess one.)

I'm not in Finland anymore, I was kicked out for bullshit reasons. As my personal text signifies, I'm (about to be) in Brazil.

Collectable spoons of the third Reich reminded me that my grandfather always mentioned the only Book the Nazis let him read in the officer camps was a encylopedia of infectious diseases. God he hated that book.

...why would you even... read Ulysses in Finnish? How would you even do the Sirens? Or, my god, the Oxen of the Sun?

It is madness. I mean, I have a book buying problem myself, but at least my collection makes sense.

Collectible Spoons of the Third Reich? Mind = Blown

It was 6,50€ and I'm a huge Joyce geek. It was irresistible.

I've heard there's a French translation of the Wake, if anyone's interested.

The spoon book was bought on a whim- product of a vanity press. This was further attested to by the fact that the poor author had clearly had been forced to buy dozens of copies of his own book, because the copy I got, used, said "Merry Christmas Frank- from [author's name]."

It was hilarious in a pathetic way.

Books... booooks. Many hundred, yes. Most fiction, few less frivolous stuff. They've been stuffed into boxes or closets for... years, now. I'm terrifyingly glad I'm fine reading stuff off the computer. Just... gutenberg alone, has saved and will save me many, many (more) hundreds of dollars. To say nothing about transferring my fiction reading over to non-commercial stuff. Thousands upon thousands in cash, even at thrift-store prices. Good reading is good reading, even if it's unpublishable on the market for whatever reason. And then there's e-books... don't need a dedicated reader, yo'. Just a computer.

But anyway. Nothing wrong with a lil'bibliophilia if you're still able to feed and shelter yourself. My problem was I was booking myself out of food money even at a quarter a book :-\

There's something almost bower birdish about the syndrome. I know I won't get some of these books back until I have my own flat or house, which could be a decade or more. But I want the books for then.

Problem is, I still want the physical versions. For example, one of my favorite plays is Ibsen's Hedda Gabler. I read it on Gutenberg. But I still desire a physical, bound copy.

Ok, I can understand that. I probably would have done the same thing. I once bought a book called Hella Nation because it was $1 and had this cover.

This however is crazy to me. Can you really call that a translation? I'd call that semi-translated with 800 pages of footnotes.
