Well you might have heard about things like "Year of the dragon" etc? there are 12 animals in the chinese zodiac, and 5 elements, giving a different combo for every set of 60 years.

e.g. if you were born in 1976 you're a Fire Dragon. We won't have any more of those born until 2036.

They do, in the way that they believe in the empty space in a circle.
Air wasn't seen as an element, but rather a place where the elements and the forces interact. Wind is yang moving through the air, stillness is yin. Smoke is fire, fog is water, dust is earth, etc.
