I'm going to open a new thread just for this topic, so we don't clutter up the WTF thread. Plus, for posting of updates (and condolences if he becomes the world's first supersonic man-impact casualty).

I was about to do the same. I think a general purpose "Science and Space" type thread would be a good home for it.

Wasn't there a dude who did the same jump from ~4 miles lower years ago?
The current record holder is a former Air Force Colonel who jumped from 102,800 feet back in 1960. He's also an adviser on this mission.

Since they're streaming this live (and a bunch of other news sites are picking up the feed too), I really hope they show this to kids in the classroom.
You want kids interested in science? Don't show them a frog being dissected, show them a dude skydiving from spaaaaaaaace.
We saw imagery from the 1960 jump, I believe.

Hey, I normally stay far away from reddit, even the relatively benign sections.  :P
Yeah but that has been posted here before, probably in happy and wtf threads AND I posted it on pony forums too! :D

You have not been observant enough! :P

That's pretty much the norm for me. Also I can't constantly surf all of the What Made You X today threads.

The new XKCD 'what if...' neglects an important area; the ocean itself.

http://what-if.xkcd.com/15/

the bubble of gasses dissolved in the ocean water would make that area of the ocean less dense.

what this means is that a ship floating on the water would sink deeper, potentially allowing water to flood into the ship, causing it to sink completely.

I think that's hardly important, considering that flippin' cat killed everybody already.

Gnats. Gnats everywhere. I swear, there's a billion of the suckers flying around my town. That number is not hyperbole. They're one big swarm covering the city. Driving home today, it sounded like the windshield was getting hit with light rain. Only in this case, the "rain" was bugs.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Now imagine that, except with cicadas. That was one of the best summers of my childhood, thanks in no small part to a trusty lighter and quite a few cans of aerosol spray.

SO I have watched a bunch of Garry's Mod vids on youtube.
Combine that with the time of the day being three hours over midnight.
So now whenever I try to read webcomics.. it just feels weird..

I need sleep.. now..
