In some ways, although they never tried to be THAT realistic, mostly it was just about making fun of lots of scifi tropes and such.

Also I always wondered how they managed to keep that ship going for three million years.

Well, you only need to start the engines once, and then whenever you want to turn, so it's not implausible.
