Sometimes I leave the radio on while I sleep, woke to this, in my half-asleep state took me five minutes searching my room to figure out it was the radio. I spent this time with a hunting knife in one hand and a katana in the other.

Depends on location and state, but if you actually signed anything, the rental is legally yours in most places.

Looks like UK according to profile information. In the UK even oral agreements are considered binding contracts, and there are rules for what constitutes a fair tenancy contract. This kind of behaviour is quite illegal, but I know from experience it's no fun to fight with a shitty landlord as a student (or ever), so good luck.
