... it may be because I've always been in housing with central air, but. Least round here, most bathrooms do have a vent, in the ceiling? No need to open the window, probably a really good idea not to because that's how bugs get in. Also no need to open the door to air it out, the room's built for that. Seems, uh. Fairly reasonable design for a bathroom, really...
Every vent I've had to use has been pretty meh at getting rid of heat and humidity in a timely manner. Windows have the big advantage of... being big. Tend to vent the room pretty pronto.

Maybe it's the climate, not the same degrees of heat and baseline humidity as places not in the 50-odd degrees North latitudes, but... Extractor fans seem to do well enough over here. Either in the (normally closed) window or out from the 'inner bathroom[1] without windows' as most hotels generally have. Occasionally in homes, but none of the handful of homes I've lived in have had them. (Childhood home once had one set in the kitchen window, but wasn't reinstated in the 'new' double-glazed windows installed in the '80s.)

Of the three houses I'm currently most familiar with, the (frosted) bathroom windows of two of them are on the first floor (US: 2nd), the one with most potential overlook onto (to discern the rough image of any pink blob that might be naked in it, with halfway viable lighting conditions) has a roller-blind. All three of them have a thin 'upper' opening bit to the window that... Mostly remain closed. In hot weather, I might open one of them to encourage heat-trapped air to vent out from the whole house, but never necessary to deal with steamy showers. Maybe there's just better moisture-resistance/air-bricking, or maybe I just don't have hot enough showers/humid enough weather to make it a problem.

From Land's End (well, Mousehole) to John o'Groats (just up the hill, by the junction off the A99 towards Castle Of Mey), the various hotels/hostelsI've been in have had extractor fans, which might be a matter of commercial building-use regulations, but I could also just open the window in one (JoG, opened into an inaccessible 'gap' between the buildings that formed the whole site), to save myself the noise. With no obvious condensation build-up.

[1] The quite literal room with bath and showerhead (or at least a fully equipped shower-cubicle). As well as the loo/sink. Though individual WC-only 'cubicle' rooms tend to have lighting-linked extractor fans (just for the smells?).

Having windows in the bathroom is always weird to me especially if they're transparent or in the shower.

I mean... I've been living in florida all my life. Pretty sure the heat and humidity's worse 'round here than 50 degrees north or the UK :P

Least in my experience, just having the vent is enough. Between that and the air circulating from the AC, lingering humidity in the bathroom just hasn't been a problem. There's actually is an extractor fan in this house's bathroom, but it's less about the humidity and more about stank, heh.

Ah yeah, well here in the UK we don't really do AC at all.

The UK isn't humid. It's moist. Slugs-in-walls, moldy ceiling, cold sweat under armpits, fungal grove in the backyard kind of moist. The only reason they're not yet overgrown with plump helmet men is that they've been fumigating their everything since the industrial revolution. Some healthy pollution still lingers, but the air is getting clearer now...

Oh. Well, yeah... if you design a bathroom with no air circulation, things will go poorly. All the ones I've encountered in my life had better sense than that, so far :P

Instead of buying a gun, you could also report the incident to the police, and shower with your window closed until the police caught the deranged person and delivered him to psychiatric care.
Even more so if your bathroom window looks out towards a neighboring window, and firing a round has as much chance of killing an innocent child in a building across the street as it has a chance of killing a deranged person threatening to bite off your cock.

The police in my city are approximately 1400 officers short of their minimum recommended staffing. A district I work in has 6 officers per shift for an 80 square mile area. We're at approximately 10-15 shootings a week, mostly related to gang crime, home invasions, and carjackings; the news stopped reporting violent crime below the level of rape/murder a couple years ago because it was clogging up the feeds. Average police response time in my neighborhood is 10-20 minutes for anything violent short of an active shooter, and >45 minutes for something on the level of a junkie attempting to enter a home. I cannot shower with the window closed because I signed a contract agreeing I wouldn't and can't afford to move or get evicted (also would not like black mold or rotting drywall from moisture buildup). A neighbor of mine had to pull a gun to chase someone out of their house who'd just casually strolled inside and started pocketing stuff while they were unloading groceries from their car and the police never responded to that at all. Direct line of fire out of my bathroom window is a bunch of AirBNBs owned by out-of-state companies that are empty during the week and full of drunken fratboys on weekends. There are no psychiatric care resources, the local jail is so full they're letting non/less-violent offenders out early to make room for murderers, and the shelters+halfway houses don't even have a quarter of the beds they'd need to provide space for the permanent transient population much less the busloads of junkies being sent here from other cities who filter out into neighboring towns.

With all due respect, please don't get preachy with me about a situation you have no awareness of. I help homeless people at work on the daily and am well aware that most are in a bad patch and not bad people... but also that a lot of the addicts are way too far fucking gone to help. On the level of repeatedly missing a vein and spraying blood all over a window while sitting less than ten feet away from children because they can't be bothered to go into a bathroom before they get their fix. Not too far away there was a recent case where someone killed, dismembered, and cannibalized their own mother while they were high on some mix of this shit. It's not my job to play social worker for someone who's actively trying to break into my home and hurt me.

Fucking islands man. No matter what, you're not far from a whole lot of water. Think a breeze will get rid of the humidity? Fuck you, that breeze came across the sea and brought more humidity with it.

Unrelenting mugginess. No wonder we took over 25% of the world, we were trying to escape the damp.

Even without the fan in the bathroom on I've never had problems with humidity building up in there.

Is a landlord even legally allowed to demand a window to be open? That sounds like a creepy agreement leaving shady landlords the option open to hire a junkie to come bite off your dick if he has a conflict with you.

But yeah, as said before in the replies, it's not technically very hard to make a construction that bars your window from opening far enough for someone to get through.

Just gonna say that if the druggy is drugged up enough to jump up to a high window to try to bite a dudes dick off, a bared window probably will just slow him down slightly if he really wants in.

It doesn't sound legal, but I don't know US law.

Specifically, it seems to break the right to privacy, since the landlord essentially demands that if you shower, you strip in front of whoever is on the street.

Not sure about the US, but pretty much all bathroom windows here are fairly small and placed higher up, right under the ceiling. Both to help with ventilation and with privacy as you generally have to stick your head inside to be able to see anything in there.

Also guns and bars are lame, what you want is to rent an excavator dig yourself a decently sized moat and figure out what critters with a taste for humans would be a good fit for it.

From the sound of it more of the same, just reduced in size.
