On the EULA topic, I would think the thing is that certain rights should not be possible to waive at all, or at least not without a personalised exemption and legal document notarised by a witness. Certainly not via some boilerplate pop-up that comes up when you login to an app or website.

There is generally speaking no situation in which it makes sense for a contract to require someone to waive some of their labour rights, their legal protections, their right to litigation or compensation for malfeasance, so on and so forth. For the extremely rare situation where these sorts of things are actually warranted, the agreement should be gone through in detail beforehand to ensure that both parties know what is being agreed to.

In Europe at least they could be thrown back if the terms are not fair. I presume there are similar federal laws in the US

Something is making a vibrating noise. Not my phone, not my xbox controller. It's random and infrequent, so pinning it down isn't easy.

Best I have is next door's set their phone against the wall, or there's a bug - Moth or something big - Stuck in one of the cardboard boxes in my room. It definitely sounds like it's coming from my room.

Guess I'll wait and see if it vanishes by itself before I start trying to track it down.

Exactly, you just need to set the box on fire to defeat the horrible hairy monstrosity inside and you win.

We all win, really; fewer moths in the world.

I've moved my estradiol patches to my leg, and there's something about certain spots that makes them itch like absolute hell. It's not an allergy, I've had no issues until I moved them down there, and half the time it's fine the other half...

I dunno, body's weird man.

I can't even... In June, in a small city in Germany, not very far away from where I live, a young girl of 11 years gave birth to a child. The father of the child, according to some kind of DNA test, is the 37 years old stepfather of the girl. He raped her when she was 10 years old. That in itself is enough of a WTF, but:

Today I read a news article about the father being taken into custody pending trial. 4 months after the initial investigation!

WTF did it take this long? From my wife (who does some work with schools for the prevention of child abuse) I know that children have to tell an adult on average 7 times of experienced abuse until adults start to believe them, but still I can't understand why it took this long. I'm a little bit freaked out.

I can only assume the DNA test results weren't in earlier. Or they needed to be double checked to see if the culprit was not a close relative of the stepfather.
Justice systems in western European democracies want to be really, really sure they arrest the right person, in the correct way, to prevent wrongful arrest and to prevent a case from blowing up in their face due to irregularity.

Does this also mean that the man still got to be near that child for those 4 months? I highly doubt that. Considering German child protection laws, we can be pretty sure that the girl was taken away from the mother / stepfather and placed into protective care as soon as her pregnancy / giving birth was discovered.

I hope he gets a long, long prison sentence in a place where people know what he did, with no access to vaseline.

If you think that rape should be the punishment for rape, you should openly advocate that the laws of your nation are changed to reflect that instead of hoping it illegally happens in the most harmful to everyone way possible in a darkened corner where society doesn't have to acknowledge it if they don't want too.

(...)

Yes, girl and baby were taken into protective care immediately (in june I presume), so the father had no contact. And maybe the courts saw no danger of the father going to ground. And I understand and support a justice system that takes extra care to make sure no innocent people are punished. But the news article from june already mentions the result of the DNA test, and that 4 months period leaves a sour taste in my mouth...

Once the laboratory receives your DNA collection kit, it takes around 2-3 weeks to extract the DNA from the swabs in the kit, purify the DNA, and perform quality control testing to ensure the DNA is of sufficient quality and quantity. The next stage is sequencing the DNA, which can take an additional 8-9 weeks.
source: Google's response to 'how long does a DNA test take'

4 months to attain absolute certainty for a legal case sounds pretty legit

I am again caught off-guard by the surprising overlap between mellow atmospheric fantasy/dungeon synth, and (apparently) black metal.

[Listening to cozy, calm medieval fantasy background music] "Oh this is nice, lemme look up the artist... Oh, huh. They're called End Eternal, and this track is called Soul of the Wretched off of the eponymous EP. And there's a picture of them in corpse paint, neat!"

Heck, that tiktok gnome wizard track is "Misantrop" from Blod Besvimelse.

I mean, I'm 100% here for it, I just wasn't expecting it. Nice to see the old nerd/metal convergence still being maintained.
