In Malawi, after 10 years of being banned, 1200 children are finally allowed to go to school again.
For 10 years the Rastafari community in Malawi has gone to from court to higher court, and they finally won: Rastafari are now allowed to go to school with dreadlocks.
For 10 years, Rastafari children were not allowed to go to school unless they cut their dreadlocks, which is a no-go in rastafari religion.
It's like telling a muslim or a jew he is not allowed to go to school unless they eat porc.

Now a supreme court ruled in their favour, and schools can no longer require kids to cut that hair.

I can only imagine how weird is going to be for a bunch of 15-16 year olds to go to Kintergarten and primary school for the first time.

There's a very long history of racists spreading lies about them being unhygienic/dirty really hard, mostly. It's led to bans and stigma for decades at a minimum.

Same reason people used to require certain hairstyles in American and European schools not too long ago, presumably

Or like when the American government took Native American children from their families and cut their hair before putting them in schools. Like Rastafarians, a Native American's hair is a spiritual thing.

When I think of enforced hairstyles I think of how in 1850s San Francisco prisoners were required to cut their hair short ostensibly for hygienic reasons, which ended up affecting Chinese prisoners because their braids would be cut off, and those represented loyalty to the Qing emperor, meaning they could not visit relatives back home afterwards.

Now that I write it out I've realized the more strange hairstyle policy here was the Qing emperor requiring the braids.

After the so-called blackout, the shambolic state of affairs led to several different possible outcomes among subreddits:
1. The subreddit reopened and everyone shrugged
2. The subreddit remained dark, until the mods were threatened with removal.
3. The subreddit reopened (either voluntarily or after being threatened with mod removal), but under a stupid ‘protest’ re-theme.

Like r/pics followed #3 and decided to only allow John Oliver pics because Last Week Tonight man represents the ethos of Reddit or they’re trying to goad a show segment out of him. It’s all very stupid.

I'm pro protest in general, but man the mods of various subreddits really completely and competently destroyed the protest when they tried to take leadership of it. Not the first time reddit mods have completely destroyed their own objectives by their desire to be at the front of something I guess.

End result seems to be that a bunch of subs went private meaning a bunch of google searches will yield nothing unless you connect to reddit (presumably, I haven't tried).... Man you really showed your corpo overlords, I bet they hated that....... I bet all of the people who are super vocal about it still spent hours a day on the site, hacktivism in a nutshell.

Not only that, the blackout was for two days.

Two fucking days.

Loads of subs said they'd then see what had changed and make a decision. What changed? Nothing. Decision? Business as usual.

Once Reddit threatened to demod everyone, it was inevitable that it'd fail. The mods really enjoy the tiny bit of power being a mod gives you, so of course they'd cave. Never mind that they're literally working for a corporation for free.
