What I'd like to know is why electrical energy is counted in Watt hours rather than Joules. 1Wh=3.6kJ.

Oh, and 4*3.6=15.4. Perhaps there is some discreptancy in EVSE using actual kWh, while car and power company use MJ?

Because gigawatts are really large.

1W=1J/1s=1V*1A.
Gigawatt is 1 000 000 000 Watts. At such amount of power, even 99% efficient car would produce 10MW of waste heat. For reference, that is enough to bring 23.9 liters of water from freezing to boiling in one second. (Assuming it both starts and ends barely liquid. If we added phase changes, it would be less water, but harder to calculate.)

Arguably, it's easier to relate the amount of energy in kWh to everyday consumption. You run your 100 W appliance for 10 hours, so you've used 1 kWh, and it costs you whatever a kWh goes for. With Joules you'd have to count time in seconds, or struggle to convert to hours on the fly. Like, if I run my 25 W thingamajig for 8 hours, how many Joules is that? Just a bit harder.

720 kilojoules, in my head? 25W * (3600*8)s = (25*8)W * 3.6 ks = (360*2) kWs = 720 kJ, is my process there

Fun with units: my vehicle energy consumption is 400 newtons.  My wife's car gets about 0.00012 square inches.
