I tend to play on mineral-rich worlds anyway, but I do seem to find steel making materials more than both copper and tin. Bronze is surprisingly rare to be able to make without trading.

From what I remember of history, isn't it realistic that bronze requires trading to make? Real life empires happened due to the fact that copper and tin aren't found at the same sites, but combine to make a particularly sweet alloy.

But then, what you can get from trading in DF is still pretty much a crapshoot, not like you can really do stuff to secure a trade route for anything in particular.

Not *quite* accurate, if you don't mind playing the world instead of the fort.  You can build one fort on a copper deposit, then a second fort on a tin deposit, and then your civilization will have both ingredients for bronze, plus should have bronze itself.  Or...just build a fort on a tin deposit.  Most sites have copper, and most civs have copper in the form of Tetrahedrite.  It's tin, or Cassiterite that is a bear to find.

I read it as the lawnmower being remarkably flimsy, perhaps good for only 2-3 uses, and yet people keep buying more because it's somehow worth it. 

You'd think that would be impossible for such an expensive appliance... but it reminds me of a local burger joint which (I'm told) used to offer an almost absurdly expensive salad.  If you asked for the right dressing, you'd "accidentally" get MJ instead of lettuce
