They're called miniguns because they're smaller versions of the fuckhueg autocannons you might find on a fighter jet.

It's called such because it was designed by scaling down a M61 Vulcan. The Minigun uses 7.62x51mm rifle ammunition, the Vulcan uses 20x102mm autocannon shells.
