I didn't design the alphabet or the font. Also, "ы" represents a sound that is like the "e" in "roses".

So its the "Schwa" sound.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwa

Specifically:
'e', as in taken [ˈtʰeɪkən]

The recording doesn't sound like that sound in particular... It's much lower-pitched. It's this one:

According to that site, that's more the sound in "good".

Now I want to start a thread where people say a specific word, and share the pronunciation.  For me, the e in roses is schwa.

No, it's the sound in "good" as pronounced by a specific kind of heavy Southern accent ("oo" is a rounded vowel in most English).

I speak one of the families of South African English that uses the close central heavily, I can definitely tell the difference. :P It's similar to the mid central vowel, but it's definitely not the same.

As long as we're talking standard English pronunciation, it's closer to the /ɪ/ vowel, e.g. in bit. The long /u:/ sound in good is rounded (the lips are not relaxed) and the tongue placement is more distant.
If you have good control of your tongue, try saying shwa, but raise the middle of the tongue towards the palate. Or say /ɪ/ but push the raised part of the tongue back a bit - but not as far back as when producing /u/.

I put in my earpiece since I am work, so I could play the sample.  The sample sounds like long e, like in rede.

I love that here we have a Russian, Pole, American and South African all trying to describe sounds by how they pronounce English words

Palazzo and I are both using phonetic terminology, not comparing English words. The real problem here is wierd, who keeps rejecting the phonetics because they sound funny to him. :P
