Could EMS actually get around the processor limit? I was always under the impression that the processor max still applied, and EMS/XMS were merely protocols designed to get around the 8088-induced limitations on what DOS (an 8-bit OS that Microsoft was never able to upgrade to 16 or 32 bit without breaking software) could access.

YES.  That was the intent.  An 8088 (which EMS was meant for) could ONLY address 1mb of memory, TOTAL.  That is why the page frame is between 640k and 1MB, in the adapter rom region.

DOS actually uses 12 bit addressing, btw.   That's why it is 1mb, and not 256kb.

That math isn't right at all.

It's 20 bit, not 12 for 8088. There's no "nice" number of bits that gives 256K of address space (that would be 18 bit actually). The 'base' is 64KB for 16-bit addressing and the extra 4 bits means x16, so 1MB for 20-bit.

Interesting. I've only ever heard of it in the context of 286 and later PCs trying to access the extra RAM without being able to use Protected Mode.

To understand the evolution of EMS you need to know that it originally was a hardware memory expansion.  The poster child being the 8bit intel above board.

Youtube is recommending me anti-feminist and pro-trump stuff that it basically shouldn't be. I'm a little disturbed, due to the context of how I use the site.

I never look at anything more political than minute-long news clips on youtube, and those barely ever. I like my news in text form, when possible. I generally remove any political content from my recommendations regardless of direction, I think internet videos may be the worst platform for debate ever made. So it shouldn't be that youtube is trying to show me the side of a debate I don't always see.

Perhaps I appear to be politically callow, and in need of my horizons widened in general. But this can't be political education. It's an attack on an unheard-of website's investigation of a rather small social media trend. Far too specific. You don't talk to someone about attacks on Brechtian theories of theatre before they know what realism is. It'd contort their understanding of the debate, or just be lost on them.

This isn't entertainment. I know for an unrecognized viewer that the odd "Judge Judy destroys feminist" sort of thing is recommended, the strident woman/ aggressive feminist is an image that people enjoying seeing attacked. This isn't ostensible feminists being humiliated on daytime talk shows for bilge-level mass entertainment. It's some faceless bloke droning on for twenty minutes about some obscure project poorly-presented anti-partiarchy site treating the traditional idea of the stay-at-home wife as an unhealthy deviation from the norm. This is an attack on something I have never actually seen or had recommended. And there's no relation to the other categories I use youtube for, such as the video being from a channel I watch or something.

I understand that youtube is owned by google. Recent political searches I have done are "eurotracker poll", "brexit poll 44%", "proportion child food insecurity UK", "uk election polling", that sort of thing. Nothing to suggest I either want to or ought to get some MAGA-chanting conspiracist's twenty minute video on the Clintons.

Perhaps I'm being the typical reactionary liberal, recoiling in shock whenever I see something that doesn't conform to my views. But I don't remember ever seeing something with a pro-feminist or pro-left line in my youtube recommendations. Maybe that's just me. But if I had children, I would be thinking hard about whether I'd like them to be online at all.

Edit: apparently I'm getting pro-trump mouthbreather-level stuff because I watched a few clips from the show Father Ted, a sitcom about Irish priests. So blow me if I know how Youtube's algorithms work.

Nah, they're giving that to everyone. Google (and other tech companies) are major users of immigrant labor, because they pay for the visas and can cut people off if they speak up about pay or work practices.

Youtube's notorious for the way the algorithm likes to steer you to objectionable content, because the algorithms appear to be fairly simplistic. Even simple gaming videos can land you in Altrightistan.

I just occasionally get suggestions littered with those weird machine-generated kids videos. I usually go through and mark them all as Not Interested, but it still happens...

There's a bunch of surreal kid-targeted CG videos featuring unliscenced popular characters, often actng completely inappropriately (for the character). It has either been alleged or proven that these are AI-designed.
