Since this little derail has pretty much milked itself dry, here's my WTF:

The number of people who actually, unironically think that "torturing" and "killing" dwarves in DF is morally wrong. This letter just got a red background! How horrifying! Do these people also protest against using glow and backspace?

It's kinda like in Bioshock where your choice is to save children, or kill them for superpowers, it's just a digital representation but I imagine people might still be reluctant to kill. They're immersed in the game world.
I get that, but creating forum threads railing against torture in DF is going too far.

Wait, are you talking about GoblinCookie's current derail of "thoughts about sex" suggestion thread, correct?

Much less active than I used to be on these forums, but I still visit them on occasion. Will probably resume my activity in full once Dwarf Fortress will be released on Steam.

Not that one. It's tangentially related, but I meant "Is playing Dwarf Fortress ethical?" and "Dwarves, Philosophy, and Religion".

Listen, if games like Grand Theft Auto didn't let you murder prostitutes to steal your money back, then people like Sarkeesian wouldn't have any reason not to play them. And then what would they do with themselves?

We provide an important service by being morally reprehensible.

Exactly my point.

I'm still annoyed that you killed Is "Playing Dwarf Fortress Ethical".  Sounds like you might regret it too :P
Since what you're posting now kinda belongs there...

I hadn't seen "Dwarves, Philosphy, and Religion" though.  Thanks!
I almost tried to make a post about Tropes Vs Women but I'm way too tired to make a proper argument right now.  I am capable of observing amateur philosophy and drama instead~

Sometimes a cigar-shaped interstellar object is just a cigar-shaped interstellar object.
...I want to believe, though.  And while I've been burned by science journalism many times before, this is still pretty weird even if it's not a probe.

Do these people also protest against using ... backspace?

I'll have you know that every bit is precious. Whenever I make a mistake happy little accident, I take care to cut the character out of its original location and transplant it into a document specifically so that it may exist peacefully with all other happy little accidents.

I just realized that because of me being able to track my bloodline back to Harald Bluetooth, that makes me able to, if we take the stories as true, track it even further to Hardknot Sigurdsson, his semi-legendary father Sigurd-Worm-In-The-Eye, and his mythical father Ragnar Lodbrok himself.

Which means I can literally track my bloodline back into pre-historic times.

Edit: wrote the wrong patronym, mean sigurdsson, not Ragnarsson

Ragnar had some neat kids... You've got Björn Ironside, Ivar the Boneless, Sigurd Snake-In-The-Eye, and... Whiteshirt.

Whiteshirt was obviously the tough one of the family.

My head canon is that Sigurd's byname was actually the word "orm/worm" not as in snake or dragon but as in literally worms. Like he got it from having worms in his eye.

Yes, that shit happens, it's super disgusting, don't fucking Google it

It also makes you responsible of shitty interdevice connectivity. Be careful about whom you tell about your parentage. I will remember you every time my speaker fails to connect to my laptop
