Was looking through my spam folder for something and noticed an email saying they knew a password of mine, threatening to send footage of me watching porn to all of my contacts. Now the funny thing is, the password they mentioned was one of mine, but one from over a decade ago that I haven't used for anything in pretty much the same length of time.

In fact, I think I may have used it for my Neopets account all those years ago, which was legitimately hacked after I logged in for the first time in years and received some special items that were apparently quite sought after.

So... yeah. I'm a little concerned that they have apparently linked my current email to my ancient Neopets (or maybe it was Runescape? That got stolen too, though it was due to kid-me being an idiot), but it's pretty funny that they're trying to threaten me with this.


No idea if it was actually due to malware like they claimed. They didn't mention the name of a website so I'm guessing that was BS. Probably.



Edit: just had one of the most confusing phone conversations of my life. I won't go into detail but it was... a pretty epic case of mistaken identity. Hell, I wasn't even sure who I was for a moment there. O.o

Are you sure it was mistaken identity? We know you like to partake of the fungus, after all. Maybe you're not actually Yoink, but this is a fevered dream brought on by latent psychedelic action.

So I bought a used bicycle. The seller wanted me to pay in cash, so I asked where the nearest ATM was. Quite far. He offered that I try out the bike for that trip and come pay afterwards. I hadn't told my name and had barely shown my face. That's a lot of trust, though it wasn't misplaced since I did in fact come back to pay for the bike. Makes me wonder if that's how he deals with everyone.

...Didn't most Neopets accounts get compromised because they were holding all of the passwords in plaintext? I remember reading something like that.

You can put your email here to see if your accounts are compromised. My email's got loads. I sign up to too much random crap.

Ah, Neopets. I played it obsessively every day as a young and tiny Joshua. I was in a guild, made my first online friends, was really active and learned basic html just to make my own little page. I bought the Neo-stocks during all that playing, and when I got tired and quit, I forgot about it. When I came back, the value of my stocks had skyrocketed and I was an instant multi-millionaire in Neo-bucks or whatever the currency was. Though at that point I didn't care and re-forgot about it.

I'd say don't reply.  They're probably sending out emails like that en mass.  Maybe change your email passwords tho, and check if any emails have been sent resetting passwords or linking accounts to your email.

Yeah I wasn't close to him. I regret his death but it's just a thing that happened.
