As an american, the t in that can't is is NOT clearly audible. Some americans, a minority really, really do pronounce t differently. Here's some examples, though I pronounce the t in all the 4.1 examples.
I take back the statement on hearing care :P

The irony of you making that joke is that the price-fixed hearing aid "industry" is complete WTFery.

it's a glottal stop as opposed to a t like in "to"

He says in the first panel that a glottal stop "is made by halting airflow with your glottis" ... and then ... that's true of none of the examples. At least, not for me.

Uh, yeah, the t is clearly audible. Similarly even in hicksvilles stateside even the drunks pronounce the t in batman.

... maybe time for a hearing check, ree?

no, it's a thing see. If it's just me why's it turn out there's an entire SMBC comic about it.

What you're probably not aware of is how much clearer non-Americans pronounce the T's in the middle of words. ... Unless they're Cockney mutants.

That would be part of the joke, yes.

E: it's okay, ree. It's not just you, you poor blighters. Apparently hearing has more color blind equivalents than I was aware of.

No, it's that you're so used to it you just compensate by assuming letters are there which are not, the same way Cockney's say "boh-llll" but hear bottle.

Check this video out, it also happens in words like button.

Americans just say "Buh-nnnn" there's no T left. Any consonant you're hearing instead is in fact a "h".

Here's an English person for comparison:

buh-ton

I associate European trilling R's with guys in Bavarian hats, with twirly moustaches and lederhosen. No thanks.

My accent used to be half cockney and half well-enunciated Scottish English (read: people can understand it) before it mutated into some working class Scot (read: unintelligible to anyone) that absorbed too many American phrases-speech. Somehow cockney has some similarities with certain other Scottish accents so I spent a lot of the time being suspected of being from other places. Like Poland.

Yeah, I don't get it either. But, I recently regained the ability to say 'th' instead of 'f'.

Germans usually use tongue root Rs, I believe. As opposed to the tongue tip Rs that say Spanish and (the majority of) Swedish uses.

English uses what I like to describe as the dead fish tongue R. In which your tongue just lies there limply like a dead fish, maybe turning aboulicly upwards a little.

Yup, it's one of the things that Nazis ruined for everyone forever, among the swastika and the name Adolf.
