Conversation passed on but I do want to make clear that I can tell the difference between "horny cow" breeding-season mooing (which is what I usually hear all the way out here) and "where's my calf" lowing, having heard both now and again. The dairy farmers I know personally don't usually separate calves at birth anyway because they think (I have no idea if this is even accurate) that the cow produces less milk when you do. Also, I'm not totally sure it even is commercially viable. No farms around here just do dairy, so it might only be profitable as an adjunct with crops or sometimes other livestocks. ... speaking of which, here's a wtf for you: why does everyone in my small area of upstate new york seem to raise alpacas, the climate isn't even right for them. Is wool that profitable? Should I be getting in on this?

Maybe they are raising them as Guard Llamas.

Alpaca wool can sell for more than natural silk. Also you can run tourist/petting operations on the side due to the animal's internet celebrity status. This is more difficult to accomplish with silkworms.

Seriously though, high-quality alpaca wool is considered divine thread for clothing peeps. If you can find a buyer, they'll pay through the nose (comparatively).


Also, I thought alpacas lacked the temperament that makes llamas good guard animals, but I don't have much experience with the beast itself.
