I recently finally got around to letting somebody explain the canonical zelda timeline to me.  But what I don't get is why they practically abandoned the grimdark 'link lost the fight' timeline, and why its easily the weirdest one anyway.  Its really just somewhere to shove the older games, or so it seems.\

Really, the whole thing where gannon runs armok and everything is crap for people is even more archetypal of an adventure story ala Link's Adventure anyway.  And where do the games-that-nobdy-names fit in?

The CD-i games? Those aren't actually zelda games, they're totally unrelated games that just so happen to feature nintendo characters. So nintendo has no obligation to include them in the timeline, because they're terrible and made by someone else.

I knew it. Toady is Ganon, headcanon confirmed.

More seriously, AFAIK they didn't abandon that one. Link Between Worlds from a few years back was an explicit LTTP sequel. (And Tri Force Heroes, I guess, but we don't talk about that one.)

What I'm curious about is where Breath of the Wild fits in. Skimming the Zelda wiki's page about Breath of the Wild timeline placement suggests to me that it's some sort of timeline merge, but there's nothing really concrete and traditionally fan speculation about timeline placement goes nowhere.

BotW seems to just take anything cool and not sweat the timeline much. As evidenced by the fact that both Zora and Rito exist. And Ganon is there, although he's old as fuck.
Really, with how different that game is from the others, you could almost say it's not on the same timeline at all, being a reboot or spiritual successor.

According to the third Star Ocean game, this is literally what happens. Technology has advanced to the point that employment is a privilege. Most of the actual labor force goes into building/maintaining an MMORPG for everyone else to keep themselves busy with. The kicker is that the main characters(probably includes MCs for the entire series) are NPCs in this MMORPG. Of course, said MMORPG is really a semi-physical alternate reality, given that the NPCs come out of the game and start punching people in the face(they were trying to delete them and reset the server because the NPCs accidentally developed the ability to come out of the game and punch people in the face).

The wiki page doesn't say anything about most of the labor force going to maintaining the MMORPG. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Ocean:_Till_the_End_of_Time It mentions that it's an artificial universe and that the external beings are in '4D space', which could be a reference to 'breaking the fourth wall'.

I could be wrong about "most of the labor force", but a good number of the people you meet in the endgame ARE employees of the company that manages the MMORPG.
