But like I said, nobody had a player out until the end of 1995. Whether the chip existed that could play it is moot, since the version of mp3 that became popular was mpeg2-layer 3, from 1995, and the first player followed later in that year.

It is possible I am mis-remembering, But I distinctly remember people trying (and failing regularly) to play MP3s on 486s (which were obsolete at the time, but still in regular use), and thus concluding that MP3 was "no good", and that they would stick with CDs. 1995 seems about the right date. It was 1996 before we had a big collection from all the dumped CDs we traded around at work.

I actually had a DX50, and was able to play them fine. (Although the system could do nothing else while it was doing so.) It was replaced a little later with a pentium 90, IIRC.

I recall a major issue with early adoption was that the host OS had no idea how to play them, and you had to rely on software that implemented the codec internally, like winplay or winamp. It wasn't until around 1998 that Microsoft licensed the Mpeg layer III codecs from Fraunhofer, and those codec packs were encumbered in a number of ways for quite some time-- Again, I might be misremembering.

IIRC, winplay was a win3.1 application?

In my 39 years, I have only had a nosebleed once, back when I was 3 years old, and my manic mom stepped on the car brake too hard, smashing me from the back seat into the front seat's head support.

Apart from that, I apparently have pretty sturdy nose veins.

BUT THIS FUCKING FLU MADE MY NOSE BLEED LASt NIGHT. WTF

Dried out the inside of your nose, man. Happens to me in the wintertime, and my hands presently look like sandpaper ‘cause of that too.

I did once self inflict a nose bleed (accidentally, kinda) to avoid an exam at school. Had to get a doctor’s line and everything. She apparently couldn’t find where it had been bleeding from, but evidently my massively bloodstained kitchen roll convinced her to some extent...

Also what’s this music thing? I listened to video game music over the weekend. First time I’ve actively looked for music to listen to for a long, long while.

My Pentium 100 could barely do anything else while playing mp3s.  I'd hang out on IRC while listening to music, and typing would be slowed to a crawl.  And I could not have a browser (Netscape!), winamp, and IRC open at the same time.  I could but it would get unusable.  I could run IRC and one other thing and remain basically functional.

And there were a lot of 486 pcs around until '99 or so.  Almost everyone I knew with a home pc was on a 486 until '98 at the earliest.  Computer lab at school was 486's in 2000 and the teachers still thought they were hot shit.

I used to not care much about music.  But I've discovered that by always playing the same music when I do a certain activity, I can connect the two in my mind.  So playing the music help me "get in the mood" to do something.  I've started making music playlists for specific creative projects that capture the mood or themes of the project.

I just caught myself talking to the microwave oven.
I had placed some food in it to reheat,
and when it made the sound that indicated it was done, I immediately said; "I'll be right there!".

Don't play Twister if you go backpacking in Cambodja.
Nine foreign backpackers are standing trial now for 'pornographic dancing', after playing Twister at a party in a hired bungalow. They could face years in prison.

what the hell kind of game of twister were they playing for the cops to get involved to begin with is what I'm wondering

Like, was this clothes optional, intentionally forgot to close the windows, porn moaning audible from a mile away twister or what? There's details missing, here.

E: Ooh. Yeah, looked it up, to all appearances folks were basically (just barely not) fucking in public within spitting distance of angkor wat. Like, uh. Suddenly things make more sense, ha.

Penalties look like they cap off at a fine and/or at-most a year in prison, though, not years jailed.

Clothes didn't go off, except maybe one guy who wasn't wearing a t-shirt because it was hot. Just slightly indecent poses, as can be expected with a game of Twister.
Think they got busted when someone posting some party photos online.

I guess the moral of the story is to never post holiday pics on social media until you are back home.

Yeah, wapo had some of said photos. Some of that was a helluva' lot more than just slightly indecent, heh. Clothes looked to mostly stay on, but, uh. I'm half sure I'd violate forum ToS to post the more blatant one I saw.

Problem looked to mostly be where they were at, though, and the ones in question were rounded up with a few dozen others at a pool party they maybe shouldn't have been flaunting crap about that close to a holy site. It's easy to take things too far, but at least on the initial look I think I'm fairly sympathetic towards cambodia's position on this particular incident, m'self. Stupid games and stupid prizes and whatnot.

E: Though cam's lot were pretty explicit that they got places you can strip down and get wild at. Moral of the story is more don't go about dry humping just outside the temple district and posting pics of it before your boner's even gone away, near as I can tell, heh.

Can't find wapo link, here's a daily mail article though, and a paywalled Volkskrant one.

Dumb action or not, I really feel sorry for the kids. A year in Cambodjan prison is nearly a death sentence. Expect to come out of it with at least syfillis and AIDS, probably heroin addiction too.

*shrugs* If they actually catch jail time and not just a fine, yeah. All things considered, especially with it catching news unless something odd happens I'd expect a fine and a gtfo my country instead of jail time for the few not already released.

Looks to be twenty year olds and whatnot, though... less kids, more young adults, if barely. Right along that edge you start trending towards taking youthful stupidity as less of an excuse.

Wapo one was from yesterday, checking the date on it, if you're interested enough to keep looking. I'd link, but again at least one of the pics the cops have released you legit can't really tell if they are or aren't actually fucking, heh. Might as well not toe the line if google's sitting there ready to help out.

I just got redirected to a clickbait site while browsing one of the art threads. Anything like that happen to anyone else? I'm not sure if it's Bay12 or if I have some adware on my machine.
