Most officially translated games didn't get fan re-translations, and Nintendo of America's censors were extremely efficient in obliterating anything slightly controversial in those days. Sega had some localized censorship (the game Landstalker had a brothel in the Japanese version that was renamed to a dance studio in the US release, for example), but Nintendo was very serious about it - which is not only responsible for the "kiddy" reputation that hurt the Gamecube and N64 quite a bit, but also is the entire reason we have a "video games are for kids" mentality (with all the Jack Thompson style hysteria that resulted as a consequence) in the first place.

The idea of a brothel in a Japan-developed 90s game isn't that outlandish, nor is the idea that even a connoisseur of the genre would never encounter such.

It's just real bloody uncommon even in stuff that hasn't been hit with a censor hammer, is what I'm saying. The closest you normally get is bunny girls or somethin' and maybe some pretty euphemistic stuff of one sort or another, not "Yo', buy this 30 buck dango to be able to go upstairs and talk to the ladies. Some might shack up with you!"

Fallout 2 also wasn't a console rpg from the (mid) 90s, heh. PC stuff had a bit more maneuvering room by sheer dint of difficulty of gating the system by the platform creators. Even more modern stuff isn't even remotely surprising.

Also I'm pretty sure I both could top that and don't want to have to dig through the porn games it would take to do it :V

The brothel was pretty tame, really.

That feeling when you can seemingly accurately summarize a scene with the words, "A talking fireball climbed up your ass, you are now the chosen one!"

Note for future designers of sprite based game graphics: Face down is probably not the best idea for the inheritance of the energy macguffin event if your work is as compact as fairly normal SNES rpg graphics. Just saying, there's some potential interpretation issues with the decision.

Somewhat related, I finally tried Killer Is Dead today.  ...Yeah.
I found Killer 7 astonishing (though impenetrable) and enjoyed No More Heroes, so I'm not sure how this surprised me at all.  Well... done?
I'm tempted to describe it as "Metal Gear Revengeance but Japanese", and giggle.  There's a lot of giggling, by me, in this experience so far.
