My personal WTF is that I've apparently triggered a heated, multi-page argument between manga and comics by asking if RWBY was an anime.

But that said. Two things. Firstly, there are two reasonable definitions of what is anime in my mind: 1, Anything made in Japan, regardless of how it looks; or 2, Anything which intentionally mimics the tropes, spirit, and/or expressions which are found in the Japanese animation culture. Just "looking like dragonball" is a shit definition for anime as far as k see it.

Secondly, I think you are forgetting that there are indeed a lot of western slice of life comics and I would say that they're read a lot more than superhero or actions comics - they just to 99% take the shape of strip comics (or in these modern times, webcomics). The vast majority of which are complete shit, of course, but there are occasional nuggets of gold such as Rocky, a very drab swedish daily strip comic about the thpughts and daily life and non-happenings of a 30-something guy with no achievements, purpose, expectations, dreams, or prospects who makes a living by drawing comic strips.

If you want to go more classical for slice of life comics, there's Archie.

In manga, the term slice of life has tended to drift over to more esoteric / atomspheric stuff like Yokohama Kadaisho Kikou, Aria, Mushishi and Kino's Journey however. Different kettle of fish altogether.

Basically, all these things are covered under slice of life in most categorizations. Mainly because there is no other western term for them:

In Kino's Journey, the protagonist, Kino, accompanied by a talking motorcycle named Hermes, travels through a mystical world of many different countries and forests, each unique in its customs and people. She only spends three days and two nights in every town, without exception, on the principle that three days is enough time to learn almost everything important about a place, while leaving time to explore new lands. Kino says in The Land of Visible Pain that this principle is probably a lie, specifically noting "if I stay any longer, I'm afraid I will settle down." The recurring theme of the anime and novels is described by the phrase, "The world is not beautiful, therefore it is [beautiful]." Kino's Journey explores what the anime director Ryūtarō Nakamura described as "a radical sense of 'beauty,'" and brutality, loneliness, nonsense, oppression and tragedy are often juxtaposed against compassion and a fairy-tale atmosphere.

"Mushi": the most basic forms of life in the world. They exist without any goals or purposes aside from simply "being." They are beyond the shackles of the words "good" and "evil." Mushi can exist in countless forms and are capable of mimicking things from the natural world such as plants, diseases, and even phenomena like rainbows. This is, however, just a vague definition of these entities that inhabit the vibrant world of Mushishi, as to even call them a form of life would be an oversimplification. Detailed information on mushi is scarce because the majority of humans are unaware of their existence. So what are mushi and why do they exist? This is the question that a "Mushishi," Ginko, ponders constantly. Mushishi are those who research mushi in hopes of understanding their place in the world's hierarchy of life. Ginko relentlessly chases rumors of occurrences that could be tied to mushi, all for the sake of finding an answer. It could, after all, lead to the meaning of life itself.

Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō is set in a peaceful, post-cataclysmic world where mankind is in decline after an environmental disaster. Exactly what happened is never explained, but sea levels have risen significantly, inundating coastal cities such as Yokohama, Mount Fuji erupted in living memory, and climate change has occurred. With the seasons being less pronounced, the winters are milder and the summer isn't scorching anymore. The reduced human population has reverted to a simpler life, and the reader is told this is the twilight of the human age. One scene depicts an anti-aircraft missile being used in a firework display. Instead of raging against their fate, humans are quietly accepting. Alpha Hatsuseno is an android ("robot person") who runs an out-of-the-way coffee shop, Café Alpha, on the lonely coast of the Miura Peninsula of Japan, while her human "owner" is on a trip of indefinite length. Though she spends much of her time alone, Alpha is cheerful, gregarious, and—unlike the slowly declining humans—immortal.

Aqua and Aria take place in the early 24th century, starting in 2301 AD, in the city of Neo-Venezia on the planet Aqua—formerly Mars, which was renamed after being terraformed into a habitable planet covered in oceans around 150 years beforehand. Neo-Venezia, based on Venice in both architecture and atmosphere, is a harbor city of narrow canals instead of streets, traveled by unmotorized gondolas. At the start of Aqua, a young woman named Akari arrives from Manhome (formerly Earth) to become a trainee gondolier with Aria Company, one of the three most prestigious water-guide companies in the city. Her dream is to become an undine, a gondolier who acts as a tour guide (see Terms below). As she trains, Akari befriends her mentor Alicia, trainees and seniors from rival companies – Aika, Alice, Akira and Athena and others in the Neo-Venezia city. Aqua covers Akari's arrival on Aqua and her early training as a Pair, or apprentice, while Aria continues her training as a Single, or journeyman, culminating in the graduation of her, Aika, and Alice as full Prima undines. Each chapter is a slice of life episode of Akari's exploration of the worlds of gondoliering, Neo-Venezia, and Aqua itself. Amano frequently uses several pages of lush art to depict an environment, showing the wonder of both everyday activities as well as one-of-a-kind events. It has been described by reviewers as very similar in tone and effect to Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō

I may have two wisdom teeth coming through at once. One is nice and polite, no pain and fairly noticeable as a tooth (as in once corner is already out from the gum). The other is anything from a dull throb upwards (it seems) and hasn't even come out from the gum yet.

Walking past the radio, I notice my stepdad has his weekly religious indoctrination on. The speaker was saying it's completely wrong to spare the women and children in a war and kill only enemy soldiers, because God demands that you kill everyone including the women and children, and the man cannot determine rules of war because God is the only one who can determine anything wrong or right, and since God demands that you murder the women and children, you must.


This really goes a long way to explaining much of my stepdad's assholery.

This is why the world's ever-more-impressive developments in bombs and chemical weapons are such a great leap forward for social justice - they're equal opportunity eradicators!


...My wtf: after the earlier discussion in here, I sat down and read not one but two of the graphic novels I've had lying around from start to finish.
Kinda good, really, considering I'm probably due to take them back to the library rather soon. I may have simply been procrastinating on something else or distracting myself from some unpleasant thought or other, but I cannot recall.
