Anyhow, I got a "you could be a juror in the future, bub" questionnaire thing for my county court. I am neither a citizen nor a registered voter, so I have no idea what this nonsense is about.

The main/only difficulty with having a healthy vegan diet is getting enough vitamin b12. From what I've read a deficiency of that is pretty bad.

There are, of course, ways around that, such as supplements or this weird shit called "nutritional yeast" (which I plan on trying in the near future, apparently it's delicious too), but they can be expensive.


Fakeedit: apparently the low-salt version of Vegemite contains b12. That sounds awful, though. I might try it sometime anyway, to see if it somehow miraculously tastes like the real thing. That'd be real nifty.

My mom always used a lot of brewer's yeast, which I was told came from beer-making and contained a lot of vitamin B.  We'd load it into soups, mostly.  I thought vegemite was basically the same stuff, but as an extremely salty paste.

I always thought of veganism or vegetarianism as the products of myopic sentimentality, and therefore token and irrelevant. If you don't eat meat, those animals aren't being saved, even if everyone decided to stop eating meat, they're still doomed. The cows, chickens, whatever, they're a doomed species, they only continue living at our demand, and if the demand ceases, then I highly doubt they can live in the wild from the centuries of focused selective breeding that only cared about bigger, meatier, and more delicious, and nothing else. So if their demand ceases, they all die, fish and other animals harvested from natural environments will appreciate it, but commercially farm harvested animals will perish.

Then, is the actual goal to show mercy to those creatures by exterminating them? Or is it more humane thing to continue just being a meat eater, therefore prolonging the cycle of these creature's suffering? I think it kinda reflects on what life is, and why people cherish it so much.

To be clear though, veganism or vegetarianism for any other reason, like you just don't like meat, obviously doesn't apply, I'm just thinking about sentimental vegetarianism.

Writing this down, I have the strongest feeling I'm badly wrong about something, as it's just my musing on the topic and I haven't done any hard research, it's just the first conclusion I came to, which makes sense as I'm so pessimistic I suppose...

Personally yeah, I'd prefer to cause a massive kill-off in livestock.  Most of them are living very unhappy lives, and represent very inefficient use of land.  It's both inhumane and a waste of resources, and I don't care about most types of animals dying.  Even if I do, it's better to reduce the cycle.

Sure, modern hunger is mostly due to the economics of distribution rather than scarcity.  That doesn't justify so much waste, and better land use would still help.
But I don't have any moral qualm with eating meat.  I agree with Tack, it should be a delicacy.  It's one thing to enjoy meat, it's another to eat it constantly because it's cheap and everywhere.  It's demeaning to the animals, which irrationally bothers me a little.  So raising animals should be a thing, just... not on the same scale.  For economic reasons and I guess moral ones maybe.

Fakedit:  That free-range stuff is pretty cool, Weird.  I get free range eggs and occasionally local meat, but most of the meat I eat comes from fast food joints...  Supporting the practices I don't like.  It's just so cheap and convenient, and morality goes out the window when I'm hungry and stressed on a long drive.  I should bring potato chips on trips like that...

Really, I could do this all day long.  The producers of these pesticides literally cover up research with shit research the way big tobacco did in the 50s ad 60s, and the way big oil did in the 70s through the 90s.  There is a fucking MOUNTAIN of science showing this stuff is fucking bad as hell, but it is OH SO NECESSARY for massive intensive vegetable production.

Rice is awesome fine. Just needs looking after. I generally pour it in cold, cook it up to boiling, and then dial it back and stir until I get hungry enough.

In my own meatnews, Ive been up for 34 hours now.  Going to try to stay up until 8 or 9 pm so I dont interrupt the sleep cycle.  Im also going to skip the gym today, but idk... I feel really bad about that.  Guilty even.

Either way, Ive started the basic hallucinations.  Misidentifying a dual fire hose attachment on a wall as spider-man's face. Shadows out the corner of the eyes.  etc.  Sleep deprivation has an odd thrill to it as well.  When Im not trying to fall asleep in a chair I feel oddly awake and on top of the world.  Kind of like energy drinks try to pull off, but much more subtle.

Edit: Frankly I'm starting to worry about the "swarms of reports" Toady mentioned.
Seems very 'safe space culture'. Time was it took only a few different forumites telling someone to chill out and they would. Jumping directly to the ban button is a bit shit.

All I can say is I was pretty toxic when I first came on here.
Nobody reported me. Nobody banned me. People just PM'd me. Me, personally. Sent a message, told me flat out what I was doing wrong and the effect it was having on others.

Telling someone to shut up about their opinion probably isn't going to go down well but I am really sick of "blind click Report" being an option.

Unless banjo was doing a forum assassination.

"Report" is there for things like the "British Kitchens" guy, the image bomber, etc--- as well as for bona-fide instances of absolute bullying and bigotry.

Sadly, as stated-- many people today are "discomfort averse", and view non-aligned dialog as if it were bigotry, or bullying. 

The usual acid test to me, is:

Does the person seem willing to offer some outside sources to back up their position? (If no, probability of bullying or bigotry is pretty high. If yes, then go to next question.)

Does the person feel the need to introduce ad-hominems, and other purposefully "attack oriented" verbiage? (If yes, probability of bullying or bigotry is now very high. If no, probably not either of those two at all. Just something you dont iike-- so move on to next question.)

Does this person have a PAST HISTORY of the prior two issues? (If YES-- VERY VERY likely to be bigotry or bullying. If NO, very very UNLIKELY to be, and your eagerness to push the report button should be curbstomped.)

Just a wee bit different when it's a fairly transparent ban-dodger, I think.

I'm a pissy, irritable jerk pretty frequently, and I've only gotten one PM warning from Tarn in six and a half years.

Main thing (apart from the obvious stuff) is to not be a consistent source of problems. Aside from the folks banned for being overtly racist, sexist, &c. it's mostly the ones who consistently flamebait or start nasty arguments that end up eventually getting perm-banned.

I've seen and participated in basically this exact same conversation who knows how many times, too, and I remember seeing similar ones in the years where I was an accountless lurker. Every time what it comes down to isn't even "don't be a dick", it's "don't be a dick over and over after Toady tells you to stop being a dick".

And likewise once more, this is far and away the most relaxed forum I've ever been on. Just the other day over on SV there was a thread full of people circlejerk-brigading someone for having a slight difference of opinion and trying to discuss it reasonably, to the point that they all reported the guy and one told him, essentially, "get the fuck off these forums, your kind isn't welcome here". Now, mods shut everyone down more or less appropriately, but god damn. I've seen people edge vaguely close to that here, but never so severely.

That's the mild end of things, too. I'm sure I've mentioned before, but I was permbanned from the Bungie forums years ago for saying that the assault rifle took more skill to use well than the battle rifle. I was permbanned from another forum for disagreeing with someone who had mod friends and a large chunk of the community riding his e-peen.
