So my pirate version of Tyranny ran flawlessly on my old PC.

Then I went and bought it from GoG, and GoG's version RUNS LIKE SHIT on my old PC.

That makes literally no sense, and the only thing I can think of is that you might have a failing component in that PC. Ignoring the fact that the pirate version for anything available on GoG usually is the GoG version due to lack of copy protection, the fact that GoG does not use copy protection means that it is almost invariably the least demanding (a lot of copy protections tend to use up an appalling amount of system resources, particularly the more poorly-coded non-Steam methods) version of the game.

And yeah, it's downright bizarre.

It doesn't run Pillars of Eternity either. Now, I had never tried PoE before on that PC... but in theory going by specs IT SHOULD WORK.

I find this annoying because I was going to go home on holidays, and I dont have a bag (or the inclination at present) to lug along my uber-laptop, so I wanted to use the older, smaller one.

Not in the last 15-20 years. That used to be somewhat common back in the dial-up and CD-ROM era, when file transfers were single uninterruptible downloads and tranferring a gigabyte would take a week, but the age of broadband and torrents means that there is zero point in reducing filesize that way.

As mentioned, I strongly suspect hardware failure. A dying video card or hard drive can often show very few symptoms unless you're running graphics intensive applications or trying to read from the specific bits of drive that have gone bad.

I would also say Rick and Morty fucks up the sitcom formula.  I expected it to be about a modern Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; dead baby jokes about how the universe is random and uncaring + genuinely interesting scifi.  And it kind of was that, except I realized something a few episodes in: the writers actually like Rick.  As in, they seem to view him as a genuinely sympathetic character.  There's one bit where he gets his mind blended with another guy who's trying to kill him (for a justified reason).  The other guy has a change of heart after understanding Rick's perspective, and then Rick (who also got *his* perspective) coldly murders him anyway.  And its like, no, that's not how it would go.  This is a guy who creates and destroys universes for fun, a guy who very avoidably and actively doomed his homeworld to a terrible fate and then blamed it on a child, a guy who if you dropped him into Marvel or DC would be a top level OP villain without even trying.  There is no logical response to understanding Rick Sanchez besides immediately running away, begging for mercy, or killing him and then drinking to forget.  And its like, they can't even make fun of him.  At one point a guy who Rick has been making miserable for 2 whole seasons lets loose on him, telling him he doesn't care about anyone.  To which Rick responds with something incredibly brutal even tho the person in question is a normal fucking dude.  And its like, really writers, that's all you've got for Rick?  How about "you don't have to work for a living and you have powers that would make Superman with a TARDIS jealous, and yet you can't even make yourself happy?"  Or "you ruin everything and everyone that you touch."  Or "for such a well traveled genius, your personal philosophy sure resembles an edgy teenager who read the Spark Notes on Nietzsche."  But of course no one ever calls him out on any of this and nothing horrible ever happens to Rick.  Even if he's up against alternate universe Ricks somehow Rick Prime always makes it out unscathed and still being a special Mary Sue snowflake who's personality flaw is that he's felt too much and now he can't feel anything.  I'm sorry, I just really don't like that character.

I don't get where you're drawing the idea that Rick is defended by the writes from. Your suggestions of what it ought to be like are pretty much exactly how the show is. As Morty Prime puts it, "he's like a demon, or a really-fucked up god, and he shouldn't be your hero". Rick is cool and even likable, but he's pretty explicitly the villain (even not counting the episodes where he's the literal direct villain like the SAW parody) whether or not he's the protagonist at any given episode.

Rick's inability to be truly punished for his crimes is a part of this. He's got a story-breaking power in his hands and it completely fucks him, OPM-style. Think of what you could do if you had a time machine (I know it's not a time machine but work with me here). If you had that you could jump hundreds of years in the future, got to a free augmentation clinic, grab some immortality and functional superpowers then jump back to the present and be a living god. This is more or less what Rick did, except he also knows almost every principle about reality there is to know. And so he can't be stopped even though he's still ultimately a fundamentally flawed human. As Toxic Rick says when lifted of all of Healthy Rick's tact: "I just discovered a new element, Morty! Do you think anybody else could do that? Do you think that if God existed he could do that, even in a billion years? The answer is no! If God does exist, it's fucking ME!" And he's right.

So Rick goes on forever, becoming more and more callous to everything because over an infinite line everything becomes routine in the same way that a child cries over a scraped knee but an adult just grits their teeth because they've felt enough pain in life to be used to it. Except instead of a minor wound we're talking about every possible form of emotional connection and every kind of crime. Rick feels nothing about genocide, he's done it so many times that it's become boring and routine. That's the real scary thing about the reality warp enlightenment experience that Rick, Jerry, and that one alien have. Rick gets the universal enlightenment, he just doesn't care. Universal enlightenment is something he's already had, broken down as a scientist should, and discarded.

Rick's motivation is a fear of routine, and as I said before, by this point anything is routine to him. The only things that are really left are permanent death and his irrational attachment to his family. And it is irrational, genuinely. All the other Ricks have recognized that they have infinite families, and so they can act against them without concern: worst comes to worst they'll just get more. Mortys are convenient to them because they are easily manipulated sidekicks. Rick Prime isn't like this, it's the one area where he genuinely has abandoned the scientist's perspective and prefers his humanity, and this feeling is strongest towards Morty Prime but ends up spreading a bit over time to the rest of the second family. Rick can start to stomach the routine of the universe, but only because Morty and the others around (even Jerry gets this treatment once or twice, and yes, that does mean that the real central moral of R&M is that friendship is the only thing in the universe that really matters). This is the only thing that is truly sympathetic about Rick, that he doesn't have to be this way but is far too proud to let it go in a way that other Ricks literally characterize as a disease.
