I'm realizing how big my state (Michigan) really is. The fact that I can drive to St. Louis from Detroit in almost as much time as it takes me to go from home to school (an in-state university) is mind-blowing.

As far as driving is concerned? There is no bigger state than Florida.

Huh. I tend to think of Michigan as one of those fairly compact Great Lakes states.

it's 625 miles from Murphy (far tip of the western NC mountains) to Ocracoke Village, but it's kind of cheating since the latter is way out in the ocean on what is essentially Nature's speedbump. Roughly 12 hours drive across the state.

I think Hawaii is the hardest drive from one end to the other.

Also, I find it amusing that the longest drive in Michigan is made significantly shorter by going through Wisconsin. Copper Harbor to New Buffalo via St Ignace vs. Copper Harbor to New Buffalo via Chicago.

And a surprising amount of Michigan is in the UP. Area wise. People wise, it's not even enough to form a whole congressional district.

Until it takes 5 hours to travel 135 miles from one end of your industrialized western nation to the next, you dont know what a crappy road network looks like. Thats the straightest most direct route too.

I should have specified that Hawaii is the hardest to drive end-to-end in a non-amphibious car.

More WTF is the fact that it doesn't appear that you can drive from Juneau (the state capital, mind you) to the rest of Alaska without going through Canada. Or fighting off-road through bears and fjords.

What a brilliant way to isolate state government. You'd think they'd move the capital to Anchorage or something.
