You know... a huge trend in bad horror games is that they all feature a gun as the ultimate weapon at around the end of the game.

But now I am seriously noticing how many horror games (and non-sandbox survival games) end basically on an action note... Where all of a sudden items are just thrown at you for the final section.

Ok... I am starting to think people don't know what Low Fantasy means...

What with a setting that features giants, monsters both mechanical and biological, living gods, magic... And the only qualifier for being "Low fantasy" is that the helmets don't have horns.

Then again Low Fantasy is starting to become a sort of hipster setting in that it is always lauded as superior to fantasy and high fantasy. So stretching of the definition to appeal to the artsy farts without being genuine is predictable.

Huh the Wikipedia page on Low Fantasy has changed... It used to be quite different last I read it. (Where it was more about magic)

And the definition is EXTREMELY VAGUE and ill-defined... to the point where honestly you might as well toss it.

But yeah... Banner Saga is definitely not the definition of "Low Fantasy" and a "Low Fantasy approach" doesn't mean a "Realism approach".

Basically there are two qualification for Low Fantasy
1) The Supernatural is supernatural: Dungeons and dragons isn't because the supernatural is a normal part of that world. It must be an imposition on the natural order.
2) The story must be contained within the natural world: So Harry Potter doesn't count at all because he goes to Hogwarts which is essentially another world altogether (which is debatable)

Yes... that is it. and even that definition is ENTIRELY argued... Here is ANOTHER definition

"A Down to earth examination of a fantasy setting focusing on the gritty realism of that setting instead of the mythical"

And EVEN THAT definition is argued... There is ANOTHER definition.

I wrote the below as a joke response to Neonivek, and then realized that I really couldn't point out anything specific that made it stand out as a joke from the rants of actual crazy people. Poe's law is in full effect. So I guess that's my WTF for the day.

Neo, bro, do you even Norse?

Norse history (not that pansy norse fantasy bollocks with Loki being some broken man-baby with massive daddy issues but REAL Norse history) is utterly rife with examples of walking gods, giants running around and wrecking shit, gods being raped by horses, magic being respected as part of the natural world with about as much surprise as a good lightning bolt (blinding, shocking, terrifying, and potentially devastating if it happens next to you, but not unnatural), and gods giving birth to various animals because (as mentioned) their ability to get around was second only to the big Z-P duo.

You're just trying to enforce your western imperialist re-write of history on innocent devs trying to make a nice game inspired by their local culture. Clearly, the lack of horned helmets makes it low-fantasy, since we all know that horned helmets in norse culture was a fabrication of western historians in order to make them seem more akin to animals and thus an inferior race. Everything else about that era is history, and even though you and others attempt to destroy that by calling it 'fantasy', all you're doing is serving the homogenizing globalizing interests of the puppet masters.

Neonivek, you need to decolonize your brain. You can't just go around enforcing the definitions of terms in a multicultural setting! Clearly, if you actually understood the complete background of the individuals whose choices you're maligning, you would understand that it's you that's wrong.
