So I'm trying to shave myself, right? While I'm literally hacking away at my hair with reckless abandon, with nary a cut or nick anywhere, I presume that my technique and blades in general just aren't that dangerous in shaving razor form. Then one slip and I take off a huge hunk of my left hand's pinky nail with a single swipe of the razor.

It's not too bad, there was a little bleeding, but goddamn did that surprise me. I have it disinfected and bandaged up right now, making it a little hard to type.

I saw it as well. I was impressed with the atmosphere but felt the direction of the film was really sloppy. It had all the makings of something great, but it didn't come together properly or tie up loose ends in a satisfying way.

Yeah, I've seen all of the Alien movies.  I love the setting dearly, but anything other than Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 feel like a slap in the face to me so far.  Prometheus wasn't so much a slap in the face, as just... a "wtf?" moment.

I really, really don't understand the xenomorph life cycle now.  What's up with the black goo?  Is it intended to be a precursor to the first xenomorphs in an attack?  Why does it make people turn into psycho zombies then?  And why did we get a huge starfish monster that acts like a facehugger instead of just a regular chestburster?  This seems to be over complicating things.

Also, I'm not a fan of the space jockeys being big humans at all.  I really, really prefer them to be utterly alien.  I know in Alien we didn't get to see what they really looked like, but human seems wrong to me.  I'm fine with them being malevolent and even making humans, but being big humans themselves... I don't know, it just feels wrong to me.

I also don't understand where the jockey in Alien got his eggs from now.  It's implied that the goo is the first part of a xenomorph attack, unless the xenomorphs were an unintended side effect, but the jockeys had clearly encountered them before and knew enough about them to have imagery of them in their ships.  I don't know... I'm just confused.

As a whole, it certainly could have been worse, but I agree with Lord Dullard.  It could have had a more satisfying end and explanation for some of the things that happened.

I actually somehow managed to avoid spoiling it for myself for once.  In this case, I'd let the movie spoil itself for you.    Although if you're not as picky about the Alien canon as I am, it might not bother you.

I just take stuff like that too seriously.  I literally had a two hour conversation on how to salvage the canon with my brother after seeing it.

The black goo is a powerful mutagen bio-weapon. It appears to react to the intentions of living things around it, hence why David didn't set it off, the humans cause it to make monsters, and Prometheus (that space jockey/engineer at the very beginning) fell apart and seeded Earth with the life that would eventually become humans.

If you pay attention, you'll notice that the Xenomorph lifecycle happens in reverse. Holloway infects Shaw, who has a proto-chestburster grow inside her. The proto-chestburster survives Shaw trying to kill it and grows into a proto-facehugger, and implants an egg into the last Engineer that in turn becomes a proto-Xenomorph. Probably a queen, as they couldn't continue on otherwise.

Keep in mind that humans are genetic descendents of the Engineers, and that at least some of them weren't malevolent towards humanity at one point. Why leave a map if they hated us back then?

This is the part that is vague. The timeframe between Prometheus and Alien is a few centuries if memory serves, so it isn't out of the question that the Engineers could have found and harvested the early Xenomorphs, especially if Shaw successfully found them, since that would lead them back to the bioweapon complex.

I didn't really like Prometheus. It's kind of an unfinished film that leaves too much for the audience to question and deduct in rapid-fire succession, and the religiosity sticks out badly and seems forced.

I think Alien was only like 50 years later, but I'd have to verify that.  Anyway, yeah, I did consider the possibility that the xenomorphs were first created at that moment, but it's again strongly implied that the space jockeys knew of them already (such as the implication that some had been chestbursted / were running from them at some point, and had imagery of them in their ship).

Is there a Prometheus thread already?  I feel like it could easily warrant its own thread.  Not that I think we'd get anywhere on actually understanding what happened.

I can't help but view Prometheus as a very poor adaptation of At The Mountains of Madness, which may be what ruined that movie for me.
