A third nipple most of the time wouldn't be a mutation, just a birth defect. Those are totally different things, unless third nipples run in a family (which is occasional but not all the time).

The average number of boobs is ~1. Extra nipples happen in 1-6% of women, call that 3%, and it's apparently more common in men, call that 5%, but let's assume it's on one boob only. So ~2% extra nipples on average. About 2.05 nipples per person in other words. And since there's one boob per person, the average boob must have 2.05 nipples. Alarming stuff.

As an Emergent Field of study amoungst today's top scholars, Boob Studies and Atypical Breast Examinations are currently underway.  There has been lots of excited talk about federal grants, and the United States has announced its intent to fully fund and cooperate the Federal Boobie Investigations in order to ensure this essential part of human evolution is thoroughly understood.

In the meantime, the FBI encourages you not to check yourself for Extra boobs.  If you need an examination you should first ask a trusted friend for assistance, and then consult your doctor.  Men and Women of adequate resources are asked to volunteer their body's for scientific examinations.
