Shakespearean sonnets are written in iambic pentameter (10 syllables a line, alternating with unstressed and stressed syllables), with 14 lines in total. The lines are divided up into 3 four-line quatrains with a final couplet at the end.

A Petrarchan sonnet has 14 lines and is also written in iambic pentameter, except its 14 lines are split up into an octet (8 lines) and sestet (six lines). They have different rhyme schemes too, and structural differences to do with the plot and when something happens in the poem

Mostly because iambic pentameter (five beats per line) works very easily in English but maybe not as easy in italian

I was going to write a sonnet to explain sonnets and iambic pentameter but then I realised it's actually impossible to put iambic pentameter in a sonnet, 'cos the syllables don't line up.
Actually now I feel like it would be difficult with almost all multi-syllabular words.

You can do just fine with two-syllable words, but anything beyond that and you really need to have a good ear for the old rolling-beat trick that any half-competent poet or Shakespearian scholar would use to teach a neophyte the trick of getting iambic pentameter pegged right quick.
